Itinerary
We will make a photo stop at the second largest Dam in the united states! Built in 1931 the Hoover Dam was the largest and most powerful Dam in the world until 1940! Hoover Dam was so large it spawned a city know was Boulder City (Largest city in Nevada). You will have an opportunity to walk on the second tallest bridge in the USA and step right over the border of Nevada and Arizona! Make sure to bring your fully charged photo device as this location is know for its beautiful picturesque views of the Hoover Dam and other scenic views!
During the late 1800’s, Nelson was extremely remote at the time with the nearest law enforcement in Hiko, NV about 200 miles away. This created lawlessness in true Wild West fashion with many prospectors being Civil War deserters with Renegade Indians hiding out in the canyons. After some time, the minors formed factions between Northern and Southern sympathizers which led to more feuding in the canyon, and killings, which at one point was everyday. There was a renegade Indian named “Queho”who was reportedly Nevada’s first serial killer near the area whose last killing was near the Techatticup Mine in 1919. Nelson was rebuilt after 50 years of inactivity with many buildings being restored to resemble the old mining town. Nelson was also used for two motion pictures, both starring Kurt Russell, Breakdown (1997) & 3000 miles to Graceland (2001). Since then, Nelson has been a destination for wedding photography, photo shoots, and a historical stop on the way to the Colorado River.
The Techatticup Mine Tour is one-hour and 0.25 miles long on gravel that is only one level. This is the oldest mine, and richest, in Southern nevada from 1861 to 1945, where you will see the quartz veins the gold and silver were mined from. The name “Techatticup” derives from the Paiute Indian word for hungry, a term often heard by early settlers from the starving Indians inhabiting the Dry Hills.

They should know that you do not visit an old western town! It is mainly a collection of junk and antiques. I was expecting an old town with a saloon, bank, hotel , general store, etc. Visiting Hoover Dam and an old mine, however was very interesting and informative . I just felt the title of this excursion was misleading!
Thank you for sharing your feedback. We’re glad to hear you enjoyed visiting the Hoover Dam and the old mine, and that you found those parts of the tour informative and interesting. We’re sorry to hear that the ghost town did not meet your expectations. The site is a historic mining camp that today showcases relics, antiques, and artifacts from the era, rather than a fully reconstructed western town with saloons or hotels. We’ll review our tour description to ensure it more clearly conveys what guests will experience, so expectations align better in the future. We truly appreciate your comments, as they help us continue improving our tours.
The dam tour was interesting. Was disappointed that we didn’t get a view of the downstream side. Also, did not include inside the dam. The ghost mine tour was fun and they had some awesome stuff to look at while waiting. Overall, an enjoyable day.
