Historically, Shai Hills is a protected area which was a home to the Shai people before they were ejected by the British in 1892. The reserve was established in 1962 with area of 47 km2 (18 sq mi) which was later extended to 51 km2 (20 sq mi) in 1973. Common animals visible and present include antelopes, bats, baboons, duiker, kobs, green monkeys, monitor lizards, royal python and zebras. Zebras in the reserve are imports from South Africa. Visitors can visit the attractive hilly rocks and grassy plains in the reserve all year round. Touring the reserve during the early rainy season (June - July) could be difficult because of rough road conditions. Popular activities include game viewing, bird watching, nature walking, and rock-climbing. After touring the Shai Hills, we drive to Akosombo for boat ride on the Volta River.

Overall the trip was pleasant. Viator stated the tour would start at 8 am but Foster arrived at 9:15am but he did apologize for being late. Ernest our tour guide at Shai Hills was very knowledgeable and the highlight of the Shai Hills part of our tour. We really enjoyed listening and interacting with Ernest. We did get to see baboons on our way to the next stop which was lunch at The Royal Senechi and the buffet was awesome. The buffet offered gluten free options because I have a gluten allergy. The boat ride was relaxing and enjoyable.

My tour guide was Foster and the experience with him was excellent. Foster was very friendly and knowledgeable and he answered any questions or concerns that I had with ease. He was very prompt with the pick up time and excellent driving keeping your safety in mind. This was my first traveling to Ghana and he was able to answer any questions and explain the history and life of the people in Ghana.
