The Ultimate Stress-Free Overview of San Francisco If you're looking for an effortless, scenic way to get oriented in San Francisco—especially on a short visit—the Big Bus Hop-On Hop-Off Tour is hard to beat. San Francisco looks compact on a map, but its extreme hills, spread-out attractions, and tricky parking make navigating a DIY itinerary surprisingly tiring. Big Bus essentially stitches the city's top landmarks into one continuous, elevated loop. The Highlight: Crossing the Golden Gate Bridge The single best part of the experience is riding across the Golden Gate Bridge on the open-top upper deck. Sitting high above standard traffic gives you unbelievable, panoramic views of the bay, the skyline, and the Marin Headlands. Reaching the North Vista Point stop offers incredible photo opportunities before you loop back. What Works Well * Great Logistics: Instead of constantly booking rideshares or navigating public transit transfers between distant spots like Golden Gate Park and Fisherman's Wharf, the bus serves as a seamless connector. * Informative Commentary: The audio narration gives solid historical context, fun trivia, and local neighborhood background as you roll through. * Flexibility: You can do one full loop (~2 to 2.5 hours) just to relax and see everything, or use your pass to hop off at key stops like Chinatown, North Beach, or the Palace of Fine Arts. Pro Tips for the Best Experience * Dress in Layers: San Francisco microclimates are real. The top deck is windy and cool, especially on the bridge. Pack a jacket, sunglasses, and a warm layer. * Sit Upper-Right: The right side of the top deck usually gets the best direct visual angles for major waterfront landmarks and bridge views. * Start Early: Hop on around 10:00 AM to get full value from your day ticket and avoid peak afternoon crowds at popular stops. Verdict: Highly recommended for first-timers, families, or anyone who wants to take in San Francisco’s iconic sights without the logistical headache.
We met omar who works for BiG BuS while we were waiting on a tram to take us to fisherman's wharf. The marathon had been on that morning so transport was very scarce. Omar brought us another way to get a bus as he was late for work. He got us there as we had time before we were to join the rest of our party we booked the big bus tour with Omar for 19 of us. He looked after us really well he is a credit to his job and a very kind and polite young man. He will go far in life and I wish him all the success he deserves.
We are glad to hear that Omar made such a great impression on you. Thank you very much for letting us know and we will be sure to let him know. We hope to see you with Big Bus Tours again!
Complete waste of time and money. Do yourself a favor and just use Uber. You’ll spend less time, less money, and avoid the frustration. On August 4, just before 12:55 p.m. at Stop 16, I asked the employee stationed at the kiosk to confirm where the bus would stop. Without even looking at me, he vaguely pointed in a general direction and recited his scripted line about the museum route having “zero wait.” It was obvious that answering my question was an inconvenience to him. My wife, our three kids, and I went to the stop and waited from 12:55 p.m. until 1:17 p.m. without a bus ever arriving. I walked back and asked if he knew the bus’s status since it had already been over 20 minutes. Again, he acted irritated that I had the audacity to ask a reasonable question and simply repeated his line about the museum with “zero wait.” I told him I wasn’t interested in the museum and that I just wanted to get on the bus. At that point, he became openly rude. We walked back to the stop, but we’d already wasted enough of our day. We ordered an Uber and left at 1:22 p.m. Still no bus...a total wait of 27 minutes. We spent $150 on Big Bus tickets and didn’t ride the bus a single time. We used Uber for the rest of the day, and it was faster, cheaper, and far more convenient. The long wait was frustrating enough, but what really sealed it was the complete lack of customer service. When employees can’t be bothered to answer simple questions politely or provide useful information, it reflects poorly on the entire company. Save yourself the time, money, and aggravation. Skip Big Bus and just use Uber.
Wait times were much longer than 15 mins for buses at all the stops. This was on a weekday not even a weekend.
We are sorry that we were not running up to speed that day and thank you for letting us know. We will let our operations team address the issue, as we are always looking to improve. Thank you for joining us, and we hope you will give Big Bus Tours another chance!
I absolutely loved this bus tour. I spent two days in SF and saw everything I wanted to and never needed to spend money on a Uber. Got picked up and dropped off right next to our hotel in Union Square, even after the sunset cruise! Loved it so much I am doing a hop on tour for my next weekend trip to Seattle! Never had a problem getting a bus or seats. App was perfect for tracking the next bus!
We are glad to hear you had a great experience with us here in San Francisco, and hope that Seattle is the same. Thank you for the kind words and safe travels!
Fun tour and I'm glad I did it but a few things- I thought it would take us closer to some of the sights- like you could stay on the bus and see everything, but you have to get off and walk to see most of the landmarks, which is fine but I booked with someone who has mobility issues and it was not exactly what we expected. Also had to wait at times for a bus because the one that came was full. But overall it's an inexpensive way to get around the city.
Hi Jessica! thank you for sharing your feedback with us! We appreciate your honest review and are glad you found the tour to be a great value, though we deeply apologize for the inconvenience regarding walking distances for your companion and the wait times due to full buses. We will share your notes with our team to help us improve, and we hope to welcome you both back again in the future! Alina@BigBusTours
Start early, get off at stop 11 - walk the bridge then get stop 12 to come back. Lombard stop takes you two blocks away from the crooked street - be ready to walk up hills!
Thank you for sharing your experience and helpful tips! We're delighted to hear that you enjoyed exploring the city with us. Riding the full route first is a great way to get oriented and decide which attractions you'd like to visit in more detail afterward. We also appreciate your recommendations for fellow travelers. The walk across the bridge is well worth it, and you're absolutely right—those visiting Lombard Street should be prepared for a bit of a hill climb, but the views are worth the effort! Thank you again for your feedback, and we hope to welcome you on board again soon. 😊🚌✨Alex@BigBusTours
This was a 2.5 to 3 star experience. The recordings do not match with the location and you keep looking for the bldg or the street or the monument that the recording is mentioning. The upcoming stop is not announced so you have no idea till the stop if you should get down there. The recording shares good history of SF but barely anything else about the areas or the stops or what one can explore in that area. Some other tours have more stops than Big Bus.
We appreciate your feedback as we are always looking for ways to improve. We will continue to work on the audio timing until it is 100 % accurate. We hope to see you again with Big Bus Tours and that you will experience an informative narration with plenty of stops!
Very friendly staff. The driver was very informative with great information about the city I would highly recommend
