My partner and I booked the tour through TripAdvisor 3 days prior to departing and the process was seamless. We were informed that someone was able to pick us up in Umhlanga on the morning of departure and received Watsapp updates from Emile leading up to our departure. On the morning we were met by the wonderful Thabo in an absolutely spotless and spacious vehicle. Thabo was awesome to chat to and full of information about the local area - just a really nice guy and a born tour guide. He stopped for us to stretch our legs and get coffee and then transitioned us to Siya who is equally amazing and drove us up to Sani Pass on a spotless 4 wheel drive. We stopped halfway for coffee and to take photos and were even offered a complimentary Amarula (a very nice South African liqueur) on the way up. The drive up the pass is very steep but Siya was extremely adept at navigating it. Border crossing was extremely seamless and we enjoyed a visit to a traditional village and enjoyed lunch - we also saw snow and built some snowmen. Highly recommended day out and well worth the money we paid. Can’t fault Emile and his team (he even followed up personally the day after to obtain additional feedback (those sorts of personal touches and wanting to strife for always improving the customer experience are rare). By pass all the rest and just book with Roof of Africa tours. 100 out of 10!!!
Long day. But worth it. Beautiful scenery. Very knowledgeable guides. Adequate breaks. Comfortable transport
The tour itself was fine. However, the weather was bad. The weather in Lesotho was so sudden that it could not be predicted, so it seemed inevitable. The fact that I could go from Durban to Lesotho on a day trip was a great advantage of this tour. I went comfortably because the tour company connected the vans. Despite the bad weather, the scenery was good. The first driver wandered for 30 minutes because he didn't know exactly where he had to drop me off in Himeville.
Thank you for taking the time to share your honest feedback. We’re glad to hear you still enjoyed the overall experience and scenery, and that the seamless connection of vehicles made it possible for you to comfortably do the day trip from Durban to Lesotho. You’re absolutely right that mountain weather can change suddenly and is often unpredictable, but we’re pleased you were still able to appreciate the beauty of the area despite the conditions. We do sincerely apologise for the inconvenience you experienced with the drop-off in Himeville. That is not the level of service we aim to provide, and we will be addressing this with our team to ensure clearer communication and smoother logistics going forward. We really appreciate you bringing it to our attention.
What an amazing and thrilling experience!!!! Absolutely breathtaking and exhilarating! Once in a life time trip to the “Kingdom in the Sky”. Our guides were not just awesome! 5 star experience!
Wow, thank you so much for the fantastic review! We’re thrilled to hear you had such a breathtaking and exhilarating experience in the “Kingdom in the Sky.” Our guides will be so happy to hear your kind words — they really love sharing Lesotho with guests. It means a lot to us that you felt it was a true 5-star, once-in-a-lifetime trip!
Super nice experience to Sani Pass! Beautiful landscape and bumpy roar up the pass to the highest pup in Africa! The way to Underberg is a bit long, 3h in a comfortable mini bus and a friendly driver explaining so much about South Africa and local things. But then the road trip up the pass starts and it was a beautiful experience. The beauty is the small group (we were 4 in the Jeep) and hence stops upon our request was not a problem. Also there was a good communication with the experienced driver and other participants (if you want). Next time I will do it again! For sure!!
This was a fantastic day tour from Durban - highly recommended. The scenery is beautiful and I felt very safe with our driver and guide - both of whom were a wealth of knowledge about Lesotho, KwaZulu-Natal, and South Africa in general Five stars all the way!
Thanks so much for the awesome feedback! We’re glad you enjoyed the beautiful scenery and felt safe throughout the tour. Your five-star recommendation means a lot to us.
Thabo was an amazing guide and we really enjoyed our day with him and Peter. Thabo and Peter will teach you a ton about South African and Lesoto culture and history.
Thank you the amazing review, we were delighted to receive it.
This was a one day trip from Durban - it took about two hours to reach the edges of the Drakensberg Park, where we transferred to a 4X4. We went on a tour of the park, with its spectacular scenery. We then went up the Sani Pass, which was an steep unpaved road and then crossed into Lesotho. Overall, was a great trip and I would recommend it
We are so happy that we booked this, it was an incredible experience to drive through the Sani Pass and visit Lesotho. Also the visit to the village was a very special moment. Peter is a fantastic guide who provided us with a lot of useful information. We also were really lucky with the wildlife during the day. We will definitely recommend this tour to family and friends back in Belgium. Thanks also for the professional organisation.
Thank you for the 5 STARS! Peter is one of the very best guides on the Sani Pass.
This is a wonderful trip! We were picked up at our hotel in Umhlanga at 6am by Grant in a comfortable sedan and driven to Underberg where we then transferred into a Toyota 4x4 with our Zulu driver Lungelo. Both drivers were happy to share information about SA and the tour. We saw lots of local wildlife along the drive up the pass with lots of stops to stretch your legs, take in the views and grab some photos of the beautiful vistas. Lungelo got us through the SA border crossing quickly and then were on the 8km rugged terrain switchbacks to get to the Lesotho boarder crossing, again very quick process. Once through we were visited a Basotho village where we were introduced to their way of life and tried their bread and beer. It was now close to 1:00pm so continued onto the highest pub in Africa to enjoy a buffet lunch. The local beer Maluti is a very nice lager. The views again are wonderful and we had the beautiful rock jumper birds entertaining us. We headed back down the pass around 2:30 again enjoying the beautiful views and conversation. Our driver Grant was waiting for us in Underberg and got us back to our hotel by 7:30. A wonderful day and experience!
