Description

About 100 kilometers from Bucharest and 44 kilometers from Ploiesti, the Slanic salt mine is a recognized destination for balneal and touristic activities since 1853, when it was declared a tourist destination of national interest in Romania. Among the superlatives of the salt mine (especially the Union Mine), the most important tourist and health objective in the resort, there is a huge volume of excavated salt, about 2.9 million cubic meters, which led to the creation of cavities with gigantic volumes, respectively 14 trapezoidal rooms totaling about 80,000 square meters. The 14 underground rooms have an opening of 10 meters to the ceiling, 32 meters wide at the bottom, and the height is 54 meters. The depth of the salt mine is 208 meters. The impressive dimensions granted it the title of the largest salt mine in Europe.

Cavernous salt mine with stunning views

The driver is on a schedule so you must be on time meeting outside by the taxis on the boulevard by Hotel Bucharest. They stop 15 minutes on the way there and also on the return (2 hour drive each way). They only play a short 2 minute video so you need to read about the mine when you get there. Bring a jacket it’s about 50 degrees inside you will get cold. There is a gift shop, interesting salt sculptures, tools that they used in the mine, a cafe, large children’s play area, and some games like ping pong, pool to play. It takes about 10 minutes to drive you down into the mine which is quite spectacular to see and is very large. You can do the tour in under 90 minutes which leaves you time to get back to the van for the return. There is also a cafe outside if you need a place afterwards. Very worthwhile to see it.

The mine is beautiful, but the directions at the time of booking need improvement

The mine is very beautiful and evocative, it is worth visiting. Unfortunately, the description of the excursion was not correct; it clearly indicated the presence of an "English-speaking guide," but at the beginning of the tour, we discover that there was no guide. It would have been more accurate to indicate "English-speaking driver."

Tour Salt Mines

Sold as a guided tour in English and actually transported back and forth to the mines The site to visit is spectacular, worth it, but without any explanation of the history of the place On the other hand when you buy the tour you are given the option of meeting or pickup point (which I selected and I was not given), making a lot of excuses and lying to me when claiming it through Viator customer service A cordial greeting

Great!

No complains, we were picked up at the Grand Hotel Bucharest, brought to the mine and taken back to the same location in the city. The driver was stopping on the way so that we could get snacks and use the bathroom. Everything was great!

Definitely worth the money!

We did another tour on another day and loved that this one was more direct and had less ‘tour guide speaking’. This is more of a transfer then a tour which is exactly what we were after. It’s a great value for money and the mine itself was really breathtaking! Definitely Recommend to anyone considering it

Worth visiting

Well worth a visit whilst visiting Bucharest and the surrounding area. Definitely was a lot bigger than I imagined when we got down to the mine. Reasonably priced entry and big enough not to feel too crowded. Good for all ages groups.

Kilometers into a mountain mine you are staggered by the enormaty of it all. Interesting how many ways they can use it.

VERY spectacular salt mine, unbelievable actually. Mind blowing, wasn't prepared for what we saw. Wish there was some commentary inside by a guide.

Worth the Experience

Group of 19 people. Driver was already waiting for the people in front of the Hotel. Two hour drive to the Salt Mines, with 30 minutes stop in a gas station with a Luca Store. The driver, that identified himself as driver not guide, was really helpful and spoke english. We left on time. Arrived at 10:30. The mine is worth it. We left at 13:00. Around the mine and inside there are places to eat. We arrived to the city around 15h, since the group chose not to stop in the gas station.

A top tour

Be aware of the traffic on the way to and from Bucharest. The experience itself (the salt mine) was AWESOME - very enjoyable.
