Excellent museum

;My favourite parts were the recreation of the 'old town' and the natural history exhibit; far from being 'just a load of stuffed animals' as these things can sometimes be, hre the various creatures were shown in diaromas to illustrate ice ages and modern ecosystems. I also watched te IMAX film about sea otters, which had some amazing photography, not just of the otters, but other wildlife and the changing seasons.

Extremely underwhelming

Extremely underwhelmed by this museum. It’s definitely not worth the price. The flow within exhibits is bad and we had to back track a lot. We were hoping to see the whales laser exhibit but apparently we had to put our names down for a time slot which we weren’t told about so missed out. We spent an hour and walked away very disappointed.

Operator response

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We’re sorry to hear that your recent visit did not meet your expectations. As you noted, some areas of the museum are currently closed as we work to refresh and renew these spaces. These updates are part of a larger, long-term effort to reimagine our galleries and better reflect the diverse stories and histories of British Columbia, past and present. We recognize that this transition can impact the visitor experience, and we truly appreciate your patience during this time. It’s also possible that your visit took place just before the opening of our seasonal feature exhibition, Ancient Egypt: Obsessed with Life, which opened on Friday, June 5. This 9,000 sq. ft. exhibition features over 250 artifacts and immersive, atmospheric spaces that take visitors on a journey through ancient Egyptian beliefs and daily life. Thank you for your visit. Your feedback is valuable as we continue working toward a more engaging and inclusive museum experience.

A waste of money and time

A waste of money and time. What was once a beautiful museum is now a mess. . The government tore out the inside and made it a colonial museum. Everyone in our group was terribly disappointed .

Thank you for your review and for sharing your experience with us. We’re sorry that your visit didn’t fully meet your expectations. We are in the process of refreshing some spaces as part of a broader initiative to transform our galleries and better represent the many stories and perspectives that shape British Columbia. You may have also visited just prior to the opening of our newest feature exhibition, Ancient Egypt: Obsessed with Life, which opened on Friday, June 5. This 9,000 sq. ft. exhibition showcases more than 250 artifacts in an immersive environment designed to bring ancient Egyptian culture and beliefs to life. We value feedback like yours and are always looking to improve.

Good museum, a must-visit activity if you're in Victoria

We purchased tickets to the Royal BC Museum in advance from Viator, and were able to go straight in. The museum was a very nice natural history museum plus some great interactive spaces showcasing British Columbia's history. We definitely recommend visiting this musuem if you are in the area.

Disappointed

This museum needs a major overhaul. It seems to be locked in the 1970s using cardboard pictures as displays. I spent about 30 minutes in the museum, there was really nothing to see. I also felt the flow was off and I had to backtrack or not know where I was going next. The old town exhibit is a good idea to start, however, it’s really lacking something. Perhaps if it was expanded and made more interactive, I can see people perhaps having fun and taking interesting pictures of themselves doing things in the old town. There were a number of signs indicating either a new display was being made or something to that effect. Perhaps they should just shut the museum down altogether and renovate it properly.

Disappointed

For people who have been coming to this museum for years you will be disappointed, there is a lot of empty displays… A lot of signs saying it’s being redone? I understand changes had to be made but maybe just a bit at a time instead of big gaps everywhere.

A visit home

I've been visiting this museum for about 45 years. Some things don't change, but others do. I loved the photography display! Nice to see the wooly mammoth still alive as well as the olden days cobble streets. I always visit when I go back home. This museum is a staple of Victoria.

Don't expect a lot.

This museum definitely needs work. The current music display is boring as boring can be. We left the exhibit within 5 minutes and headed out. The best part was the wooly mammoth but the remainder is very substandard and not much to it. Went up to the 3rd floor and went to the old town. Better lighting is required. So dark and dingy. Hard to see the displays. Also the ground is extremely uneven but even if they are trying to create ambiance, its dangerous. My husband and I both felt like we were stumbling in the dark. The website says that it takes 3-4 hours to go through...we were done the entire thing in 45 minutes. I consider my admission to be a donation.

Thank you for sharing your feedback. We’re sorry to hear the temporary Beyond the Beat exhibition wasn’t to your taste. We understand every visitor connects differently with each exhibition, and your perspective is appreciated. We also take your comments about Old Town’s lighting and flooring seriously. While the atmosphere is designed to reflect the period, visitor comfort and safety remain a priority, and your feedback has been shared with the team. Thank you again for your honesty and for supporting the museum. We hope you’ll consider visiting again as our exhibitions continue to evolve.

A must see attraction in Victoria.

A must-see when you are in Victoria. Lots of exhibitions to check out but IMAX is extra (which we didn't bother). The museum can get busy though, so I would go early to avoid the crowds.
