Itinerary

30 min

At the Port of Rotterdam, you will see one of the world’s largest and busiest ports—a vast landscape of container terminals, cargo ships, oil refineries, and wind turbines stretching along the Maas River and North Sea. You can observe massive cranes loading and unloading ships, innovative logistics hubs, and modern port technology in action.

30 min

At the Cube Houses you will see a striking set of tilted, cube-shaped homes designed by architect Piet Blom. Each cube is turned 45 degrees and rests on a hexagonal pillar, creating a fascinating forest of geometric shapes. As you walk among them, you’ll feel like you’re inside a piece of modern art. You can visit the Show Cube Museum to see how people actually live in these unusual homes and enjoy great views of the city from the elevated pedestrian areas around them.

30 min

At Kinderdijk Molenkade – Ridderkerk De Schans, you will see a beautiful row of historic Dutch windmills standing along the waterways, part of a UNESCO World Heritage site. You’ll experience the classic Dutch landscape of canals, green fields, and dikes, with 19 traditional windmills that once managed water levels in the polders. As you walk or cycle along the paths, you can visit working windmills, learn how they operate, and enjoy peaceful views of the countryside and the reflection of the mills in the water, especially stunning at sunrise or sunset.

30 min

At Dordrecht-Centrum, you will see one of the oldest and most charming city centers in the Netherlands, filled with historic canals, medieval houses, and lively squares. You can stroll through narrow streets lined with monuments, visit the impressive Grote Kerk (Great Church) with its tall tower, and explore boutiques, cafés, and art galleries by the water. You’ll also notice the city’s maritime heritage, with old warehouses and boats docked along the harbors, giving Dordrecht a warm, authentic Dutch atmosphere.

Construction in Rotterdam

I wanted to let you know that this tour is much longer than 2 to 3 hours. To do it properly. It needs 4 to 6 hours due to water bus transport is uncertain times and you could miss the bus and delay the whole tour. I was not able to finish the tour based on that. Also need to put in the information that you need to start early by 9 o’clock so you can get everything done. Also, the GPS was off. There is a lot of construction going on in Rotterdam so that following the guided tour was a problem because you had to figure out alternate paths to get to the next location. The extended the trip by at least an hour. I was not able to go to the last city on the tour due to timing. I like the information it provided for the historical significance. I just wish the option to start and complete. The water bus options were first. You can always do the tour for the city last.

Leave plenty of time

The jetty where you get the boat is quit disorganised. We also booked a trip that went to both Kinderdiijt & Dordrecht. However after visiting the windmills we were told we had to go back to Rotterdam and get a different boat to Dordrecht which didnt work for us as we had something else booked. It seemed a little ineffecient as well as the route to Dordrecht looked similar and it looked easier to just continue from Kinderdiijt. So if you book this trip leave plenty of time.

Explore areas you might miss

There needs to be clearer information on how the tour works. The running time is inaccurate. It did not include water bus movement. Other than the above, I did see places i would not have found without the guide. The audio history was really good. Maps are excellent. And I would say its good value for money. As its a self guided tour I would suggest you take the day to enjoy this. I enjoyed walking around the 3 areas, and if your ticket only has 2 stops noted. Don't worry the water bus will accept for the 3rd area to visit. Go explore! Lots of photo ops!
