Description
This tour is guided by someone who was born and raised in Rocinha and has spent over a decade walking these streets with visitors. The difference isn’t access for the sake of novelty, but context. Instead of scripted stops or dramatic framing, the focus is on how the favela actually works: its layout, daily routines, social dynamics, and history as a living neighborhood. The route follows places that make sense locally, guided by familiarity rather than performance. Because this is a locally guided, small-group experience, the tour moves at a human pace. Questions are welcome, conversations are open, and explanations come from lived experience, not second-hand research or rehearsed narratives. This is not about selling danger, poverty, or spectacle. It’s about understanding Rocinha as it is, guided by someone who belongs here.

Itinerary
After meeting with the Tour Guide, there will be a short initial talk about how the tour works, answering questions and ground rules. After this, the tourists will take an educational sightseeing walking tour all the way down, with OPTIONAL places for Souvenir shopping (that serves as donations to the Favela), Lunch at a local family restaurant and lots of beautiful places for pictures. Reminder: The tour is EXCLUSIVELY in English.

An Eye-Opening and Truly Authentic Experience in Rocinha Favela. I felt completely safe the entire time. Luiz was attentive, stayed with us closely, and made sure the small group of 6 moved smoothly.
My partner and I did this tour with Luiz a while ago and it is one of the best experiences I remember from Brazil. We were looking for a guided walk and led by a local person to learn for real. I highly recommend it!!

Our guide was so informative and nice to tour with. He even asked if we would wait a little for another couple who were running late. We waited and waited but in the end we had to leave. I believe the lady became very abusive on text and this was so unfair to our guide as we all waited for some time. It was their duty to turn up on time like we did. Anything she says in a review I would ignore, it is unjustified! He is brilliant, kind and patient.
I highly recommend this tour to anyone staying in Rio. We were a bit hesitant booking this tour but our guide luiz put our minds at rest and opened our eyes on life in a favela. I guarantee you will truly see what life is really like instead of what the films show you!
