Itinerary
Ascend to the summit of Maui's magnificent dormant volcano for the ultimate vacation highlight at Haleakala National Park, reaching 10,023 feet above sea level in this spectacular must do on Maui experience. As one of only six permitted companies authorized to offer Haleakala tours, we provide exclusive access to witness breathtaking sunrises that have inspired visitors since the 1800s, explore the otherworldly volcanic crater landscape, and discover rare endemic silversword plants found nowhere else on Earth. This extraordinary Haleakala National Park adventure combines stunning volcanic vistas, unique high-altitude ecosystems, and the unforgettable experience of standing atop Maui's sacred volcano, making it an essential vacation highlight that showcases the raw natural power and beauty that defines the Hawaiian Islands.
The magnificent Haleakala Crater is an awe-inspiring geological wonder that stretches 11.25 miles across, 3.2 miles wide, and plunges nearly 2,600 feet deep, creating one of the world's most spectacular volcanic landscapes. The Pa Ka'oao Trail (also known as White Hill Trail) is a short 0.4-mile hike that starts at the visitor center and leads to an elevated overlook offering breathtaking views of the crater floor. This mini hike is just half a mile and well worth the effort, providing visitors with an exceptional vantage point to truly appreciate the massive scale and otherworldly beauty of the crater. The views from atop this conical mound are significantly better than those from the visitor center, making it an ideal way for tour guests to experience the raw volcanic power and stark beauty that defines Haleakala's "house of the sun" landscape.
Dubbed "Science City," the Haleakalā High Altitude Observatory was erected in 1958 due to the optimal viewing conditions the shield volcano possesses, where a near-absence of light pollution, as well as the high-altitude air and height, render it one of the most superb and valuable planetariums in the world. The Haleakalā Observatory, also known as the Haleakalā High Altitude Observatory Site, is Hawaii's first astronomical research observatory and spans 18 acres at 10,000 feet above sea level, operated and managed by the University of Hawaii. While visitors can view the observatory complex from the Haleakala Summit and visitor center, the facility itself is dedicated to groundbreaking astronomical research that continues to advance our understanding of the universe from this pristine high-altitude location.
Ho'okipa Beach Park, meaning "hospitality" in Hawaiian, is one of the most spectacular stops on your Road to Hana adventure, renowned worldwide as the birthplace of modern windsurfing where professional athletes perform incredible aerial maneuvers in consistent trade winds. Located just east of historic Paia town, this stunning crescent beach offers dramatic coastal views and is famous as one of Maui's most reliable locations to observe Hawaiian green sea turtles (honu) basking peacefully on the warm golden sand. The combination of world-class windsurfing action, magnificent turtle viewing opportunities, and breathtaking natural beauty makes Ho'okipa Beach Park an essential highlight of any Road to Hana tour, perfectly embodying the natural wonder and adventure spirit that makes this legendary Road to Hana journey so unforgettable.
Along your Road to Hana journey, you'll witness spectacular waterfall walls , creating breathtaking natural displays that showcase Maui's incredible rainfall and tropical beauty. These stunning roadside waterfall features become especially magnificent after heavy rains, when multiple streams transform rock walls into flowing curtains of water that demonstrate the raw power and beauty of Maui's rainforest environment. These impressive waterfall walls along the Road to Hana offer incredible photo opportunities and remind visitors why this legendary coastal drive is considered one of the world's most scenic waterfall adventures.
One of the most breathtaking Maui vacation highlights along your Road to Hana adventure is the stunning Rainbow Eucalyptus forest, where nature creates its own masterpiece through trees with extraordinary multicolored bark that naturally peels to reveal vibrant layers of green, orange, red, purple, and yellow. Located near mile marker 7, this spectacular "Painted Forest" is a must do on Maui photo opportunity that you'll experience right from your vehicle window as we cruise along the Hana Highway, offering incredible roadside views of these Southeast Asian trees that have thrived in Maui's tropical rainforest climate. This magical Road to Hana highlight perfectly captures the natural artistry and wonder that makes this legendary coastal drive one of the world's most scenic adventures.
Along your Road to Hana journey near mile marker 6.7, you'll witness the spectacular Na'ili'ili-Haele Bamboo forest, where towering bamboo stalks create a dramatic natural cathedral effect showcasing Maui's incredible tropical vegetation. This stunning bamboo forest displays incredibly dense bamboo growth reaching skyward to form an otherworldly green tunnel, demonstrating how perfectly these plants have adapted to Maui's tropical rainforest climate. As you pass this magnificent bamboo forest along the Road to Hana, you'll experience one of nature's most impressive displays of how constant moisture and rich volcanic soil create perfect conditions for these remarkable bamboo groves to flourish.
The dramatic Keanae Peninsula represents a true Maui vacation highlight and must experience on Maui, where a spectacular half-mile finger of ancient lava extends into the Pacific Ocean, creating one of the most scenic and culturally significant stops along your Road to Hana journey. This authentic Hawaiian village showcases traditional taro fields still cultivated by local families, offering visitors a rare glimpse into genuine Hawaiian rural island life that has remained unchanged for generations. As you explore the peninsula, you'll discover the historic Lanakila Ihiihi O Iehova O na Kaua Congregational Church built in 1860, surrounded by dramatic black lava rock formations and flourishing taro fields that demonstrate the deep connection between Hawaiian culture and the land, making this Road to Hana stop an essential cultural and scenic experience that captures the true spirit of old Hawaii. You will also get the chance to purchase Aunty Sandy's famous banana bread!
Stop to get delicious Banana bread, coffee, and/or food.
As your Road to Hana adventure unfolds, you'll pass two stunning waterfalls that showcase Maui's natural beauty. First, witness the picturesque Waikane Falls (also known as Three Bears Falls) visible right from the Hana Highway between mile markers 19 and 20. Further along your journey, you'll encounter the impressive Pua'a Ka'a Falls located at mile marker 22.5 within the lush Pua'a Ka'a State Wayside Park. This ultra-green park features a pair of falls cascading into pools, creating a tropical paradise that epitomizes the Road to Hana experience. Both waterfall locations offer guests perfect glimpses of Maui's cascading waters and dense rainforest landscape, making them some of the most photographed spots along this iconic scenic drive. We are on a family trip to Maui and did this tour yesterday. This trip is a mixture of repeat visitors and first time visitors. We loved this option of seeing two of the biggest sites in one trip. As a party of 10 we chose to do a private tour. Eric was our tour guide and he was absoulutely fabulous from start to finish! We loved spending the time together as a family since we had ventured from around the country. We were able to customize our day and go at our own pace. Eric was extremely knowlegeable about the island and our journey. He was able to answer all questions and for those of us who had been before, he was able to explain some of the changes that we were seeing compared to our prior trip. Having someone else to navigate the road to Hana is always a win! Doing the private tour allowed us to fellowship with one another and just sit back and enjoy the scenery and his Hawaiian playlist. The van was clean, spacious, and well maintained. The stash of snacks and beverages kept us fueled up for our day. The day was perfect and we would recommend this trip, and Eric, hands down! It was money and time well spent and it will surely be the highlight of our time together here in Maui.
Aloha, we appreciate the great review and acknowledge Eric's awesomeness. He is extremely knowledgeable, truly loves what he does, and really enjoys taking great care of his guests. We do our best to stand out from other tour companies that are very cookie-cutter. We go above and beyond to WOW our guests with the best tour they will ever take while on Maui. I am glad to hear you enjoyed the fabulous farm to table lunch, snacks, and drinks. We are thrilled you choose Aloha Eco Adventures to take you on this amazing adventure. It is truly a beautiful place! Mahalo, Laurie

Eric was our tour guide/driver and he did a fabulous job narrating the excursion and taking us to all the sites and restaurants. Eric offered flexibility regarding stops and time allotment and we had a wonderful day on our Road to Hana excursion!
Aloha, thank you for the beautiful review and acknowledging Eric's awesomeness!. He is truly a special person. I will say I am very fortunate to have the very best of the best drivers on the island. We do allow our team to cater to the group on their tours. We try our best to stand out from a typical tour and not be cookie cutter. We truly take great pride in what we do and what we have to offer. I am thrilled to hear you had such a wonderful day. We appreciate you selecting AEA to take you on this amazing and beautiful adventure! I hope your time on Maui was a magical adventure! Mahalo, Laurie

The tour was great but not as spectacular as I expected. However, the driver/tour guide was wonderful. I would give Chase an “A+”. He was wonderful and very knowledgeable.

We are thrilled you chose AEA to take you on this amazing adventure. It is truly a beautiful place! It is definitely disappointing to hear you did not feel the tour was that spectacular. We have never received anything on this tour but praise and all 5-star reviews. It would have been great to hear what you felt was missing at Haleakala NP and Road to Hana. Mahalo, Laurie
Bryan was awesome and very throughal. We enjoyed our tour. Didn't really like the half way to hana lunch stop. He needs to try the place up the road from there. Wish it wasn't a cloudy rainy day when we went.
Aloha, thank you for the wonderful review and acknowledging Bryan's awesomeness. He is super awesome, and funny too. I am happy to hear you enjoyed the amazing day. I am not sure where Bryan stopped for lunch, but I will certainly say something to him. Typically if it food trucks. I am sorry you had a rainy day. The last couple weeks have been very wet. Hana is the rainforest so it is typical to get rain at times. We appreciate you selecting AEA to take you on this beautiful journey to Haleakala Halfway to Hana! Mahalo, Laurie

Great trip to the top of Haleakala National Park, took my breath away figuratively and literally. Road halfway to Hana was beautiful and educational although I may have learned more than I wanted to know about Taylor Swift… the Rainbow Eucalyptus trees were so unique and beautiful. Our guide Bryan knew his stuff. Great day in Maui!!
Aloha, thank you for the great review. Oh my, you were with our Bryan, Mr. Swifty. He is definitely a fan. If he finds others on the tour that are also swifty's he gets super excited and loves to share. Bryan is a wonderful, kind, person who truly knows his stuff. I am glad you enjoyed the day and amazing sites! We thank you for choosing Aloha Eco Adventures to take you on this beautiful and amazing adventure! Mahalo, Laurie
