Today the Calico Hills are mounds of hard, red rock, but they looked completely different 180 million years ago. Back then, you’d instead find a huge field of shifting sand dunes.

Pass by

Up ahead is Sandstone Quarry Overlook, where miners used to harvest sandstone!

10 min

The Calico Basin Trail is a fairly easy 1.5 mile out-and-back trail that will show you some new angles of the Calico Hills, but it mostly serves as a connecting route to other longer trails.

Pass by

Need a break from the heat? The Ice Box Canyon Trail is just ahead. After a 15-minute walk through the desert, we’ll find ourselves flanked by cliff walls that create a whole new biome.

Pass by

This spot is particularly popular among bird-watchers, as many of the over 100 species of birds in Red Rock can be seen from this open, unobstructed view.

Pass by

Up ahead is High Point Overlook, the highest point we’ll see on our tour at 4,780 feet above sea level!

Pass by

Red Rock Canyon Overlook is just ahead. This overlook offers amazing panoramic views, so get your camera ready!

Pass by

If you’re visiting Red Rock Canyon during the wetter months of April-December, you might be enticed to venturing into Lost Creek Canyon!

Pass by

This easy trail offers a nice walk and a peek into history at the same time. The 2.4 mile, 2-hour out-and back trail leads to the entrance of Pine Creek Canyon.

Pass by

If you really enjoy the aerial views, and want to see Red Rock Canyon like the soaring raptors do, Turtlehead Mountain is a must.

That they need to...

That they need to purchase a separate ticket through a government website. This should be made abundantly clear. I thought it included the fee.

Operator response

Daniel, I do mention the separate entrance fee in multiple places—both before and after purchase—so travelers don’t face issues on the day of their visit. You may have missed that part. Don’t worry, my tour is valid for a year after booking. If you’ve left the location, I can help with the refund process or offer a replacement tour—just let me know what you need. I’m available daily from 9 to 6 EST and happy to assist!

Not a great experience.

The tour started out great, but once we stopped to walk around a little, it would not sync to our area. It only would restart from the beginning. We gave up!

Operator response

Hi there! I'm sorry you had trouble restarting the tour after your stop. When the app reopens, it starts at the introduction, but you can easily skip it by going to the map and continuing from your location. Thanks for sharing your experience—I’m working on updates to improve this! The tour is valid for a year, so feel free to give it another try anytime!
