Nivi and Ganesh were such welcoming hosts! Ganesh picked us up directly from our hotel and brought us to see a local temple before bringing us to his home, where his wife, Nivi, walked us through how to do a variety of traditional arts, including kolam, doll making, flower garland making, henna, and saree draping. We also got the opportunity to see how filter coffee and pori are made. They shared how traditional Indian families live and answered all of our questions!
What I loved most about this activity was being actively involved in the art, food, games, and traditions of Southern India. Nivi and her husband Ganesh were outstanding, informative, and engaging hosts. I felt like family within minutes of arriving at their home after a driver conveniently picked me up from my hotel. We did Kolom, doll making, played a game similar to mancala, made vada and dosa to snack on between sips of traditional Indian filter coffee, and wove together beautiful marigold flowers into garland. Besides all that I learned to drape a sari although I’m sure I couldn’t wrap those six yards of fabric into position again on my own. It was the perfect half day filled with sharing stories and trying new things. I attended solo, but this would be a great activity for families with kids/teens or any small group to preserve the intimacy of the setting. Thanks Nivi, Ganesh and the supporting cast who made this an experience of a lifetime. Highly recommend.
This was an amazing day out in the home of a chennaite. We had fun playing traditional board games like Pullankuzhi and learnt how to make musical instruments. We also enjoyed the cooking sessions. I think it's a novel concept to experience the culture of a city. Very highly recommended.
