Our day began around 5:15 a.m., when our guide, Diego, came to pick us up near the hotel. During the drive to the volcano, he answered all our questions and, honestly, he turned out to be fascinating. We could bring up fairly sensitive topics, and he would respond with personal stories that touched me deeply. That's when I realized we didn't have just a guide, but a Salvadoran who was deeply proud to be one. Once we arrived at the foot of the volcano, we started with a short briefing, then began the climb at a relaxed pace. There are about four stops and several viewpoints along the way, and the guide always led us to the best ones. At the summit, the view was simply stunning, and Diego even took the time to snap some photos of us. After the hike, we headed straight to eat at one of the most beautiful restaurants I've ever set foot in. The view there was absolutely incredible. All in all, I want to emphasize once more that our guide, Diego, was truly exceptional. It's largely thanks to him that this day will stay with us as an unforgettable memory.
We had originally booked a private tour, but unfortunately on the day before the tour, we were told only public tours were available. Regardless of this, we were paired with Diego, who was an excellent tour guide that we’d hands down recommend!
I had so much fun on this tour. The early wake up was rough for me but worth it. You can sleep on the van ride to the volcano. My tour guides name was Diego. He gave us so much knowledge about the volcano and the surrounding area. The hike wasn’t too hard. If you have asthma bring your inhaler. 3.9 miles, 2739ft gradual incline and it took my group 5 hours total to get from the parking to the very top and then back down. ( the 5 hours includes all break for restroom use, catching your breath and a 20+ min photo opp at the top) Bring a pair of sandals or crocs for after the hike is over. Trust me your feet will thank me later. The restaurant we went to with the lakeside view was 10/10. I’m AA from Virginia so you can trust my taste buds. The restaurant takes cash and card (Visa, Amex and Mastercard for sure)
We were very pleased with this tour. Our guide, Gaby, from El Salvador Positive Tours contacted us the night before the trip to ensure that we were prepared. She was as she arrived at our hotel on time. She provided great commentary throughout the day and was helpful throughout the climb up and down the mountain. As for the climb itself we were able to go at four own pace since this was a private tour- very important. Gaby selected a nice lunch place for us that was very good. Overall we enjoyed the tour and were quite pleased with our guide.
It is an amazing experience and Gaby is a super friendly and professional guide.. fully recommended. Our group was in good physical condition and it took us an hour to get up and one hour to get down. Carry water, snacks and sunscreen. At the end we had lunch in front of Lake Coatepeque.. it was a good ending.. both the view and the food 10/10.
Our guide Diego was one of the best! He instructed us all the way and throw some really interesting facts about volcanos. The hike was not for beginners, but fortunately it wasn't my first hike, so I enjoyed it fully. The view on the top was 100% worth the hike. Afterwards had a pleasant lunch with another great view. So don't think twice and book that tour, you won't regret it.
Great guide. Pick up and drop off at hotel. I had a great time the guide was informative and made sure we were all ok during the hike.
I had an amazing time on this excursion with Diego. He's genuinely friendly, incredibly patient, and never makes you feel rushed. He truly wants everyone to complete the hike at their own pace, unlike some other guides. Before you go, definitely keep a few things in mind: wear comfortable shoes (maybe skip the white ones!), light pants, and a lightweight jacket. Don't forget sunscreen, a hat, and at least two water bottles. This hike is no joke, and staying hydrated is key to avoiding exhaustion. Also, try not to eat a heavy meal beforehand, as there's only one restroom available once you get going. A quick tip for the trail: if you're one of the first in line, you might not have much time for photos since others will be following close behind, but on the upside, you'll avoid getting dusty. If you're towards the back, prepare to get dusty, but you'll have all the time in the world for pictures. So, you pick what's more important to you! Once you reach the top, it gets extremely windy, but trust me, the views make the whole hike totally worth it. I would absolutely book this excursion again.
We had an awesome time. Diego was perfecto! He kept everyone informed, he was engaging, made sure all languages were understood. The hike was a challenging workout but he gave good breaks to accommodate the differences in the group, took pictures, etc. The views were all worth it! I loved my stay in El Salvador!
Great experience and Diego was a great guide, I would recommend. Would also recommend hiking boots and a sweatshirt for when he get to the peak
