The Basilica of San José de Flores is a Catholic temple in the neighborhood of Flores, Buenos Aires, located in front of Plaza Pueyrredón. Inaugurated on February 18, 1883, it was the place where Jorge Mario Bergoglio, at age 17, decided to consecrate his life to God. On March 19, coinciding with the day of Saint Joseph, patron of this basilica, Pope Francis decided to begin his pontificate.

Pass by

We will visit the home, located in Membrillar 531 in the neighborhood of Flores, where the Pope spent his childhood and discovered his religious vocation. The old house with white walls and an old door with bars has a plaque with a Pope Francis image and the legend: "We pray for you, December 2014"

10 min

This square was the meeting point of the children of the neighborhood, where it was common to see them running after the ball imagining being the great players they admired. The afternoons of Jorge Bergoglio passed between games, idols and friends.

10 min

Firstborn of the marriage of the Italians Mario José Francisco Bergoglio and Regina María Sivori, as a child, Jorge Bergoglio, learned to pray thanks to the teaching of his grandmother and the nuns of the kindergarten of the "Colegio Nuestra Señora de la Misericoria" where he received his first communion.

15 min

Jorge Bergoglio received the first Catholic sacrament in the Parish of San Carlos Borromeo and the Basilica of María Auxiliadora, where he sang in a chorus "El morocho del Abasto". The San Carlos Borromeo Parish and the Basilica of María Auxiliadora, was already famous for having Carlos Gardel and Ceferino Namuncurá among its parishioners, but this detail was surpassed by this other: this is where Pope Francis was baptized

It was just my wife and I, the guide...

It was just my wife and I, the guide and driver! It made for a terrific way to see alot of places without a crowd being along. The guide was very informative, well-spoken, and we got to visit many of the churches and places associated with the life of Pope Francis. It was so nice to be able to pull up to the curb, get out of the car and see something, get back in and off we went as opposed to all the extra time it takes to get off and back on a bus with 40 other people. This was the first time I've ever had a private tour like this, and I'd highly recommend it. Besides visiting the places on the itinerary, our guide also pointed out several different parts of the city along the way. Overall a great experience!
