Nizwa Goat Market is a lively traditional cattle market held every Friday morning in the historic city of Nizwa, located in Oman’s Al Dakhiliyah region. This vibrant weekly event is technically an extension of the renowned Nizwa Souq, but it serves a unique purpose: local villagers gather here to buy, sell, and barter livestock mainly goats, sheep, and cows, and occasionally, even a donkey or two. Once the capital of Oman, Nizwa remains a cultural heart of the nation, rich in heritage and tradition. Just a short drive away lies the majestic Jebel Akhdar (“Green Mountain”), part of the Al Hajar range, offering stunning mountain views, terraced farms, and cool highland air a perfect complement to Nizwa’s bustling market scene.

We depart early Morning at 5:30 AM, we drive towards Nizwa we first visit the Friday Cattle Market. Friday sees the ancient Omani capital of Nizwa come to life for the weekly livestock market where farmers and traders arrive from as far afield as Salalah with their animals to barter and trade at one of the finest traditional markets in the Middle East. See a Middle Eastern market operating in much the same way it might have done for centuries, with sheep, goats and cattle all traded alongside local honey and dates.
Next is the large Nizwa Souq, a local marketplace that offers a variety of goods including jewelry, pottery, fish, and meats.
The next we will visit to the famous Nizwa Fortress. The fort is a museum that showcases the history of the fort and surrounding area. Walking through the fortress you get to see amazing views of the ancient town and the nearby mountains. This impressive fortress was a base used in the military to hold off the hardest attacks and sieges.
The list goes on! After, we drive to the foot of Jebel Akhdar, an old village called Birkat Al Mauz,
Then after visit the Irrigation System of Al Kattmyn, one of the 5 irrigation system heritage by UNESCO.
From there we go up to Jebel Akhdar. Also known as the Green Mountain, Jebel Akhdar houses many fruit plantations and rose gardens. Take the time to walk through the hills and cherish the valley views. There is a lot Jebel Akhdar has to offer.
Then next is Dianna's Viewpoint, the rim of the cliff here, with its celebrated panoramic view of the farmed terraces below, has a royal connection. Diana, Princess of Wales, enjoyed this spot on a royal visit to Oman with the future British king in 1986. The tourist office receives numerous enquiries about the location, a point not lost on two neighboring hotels that both encircle a potential viewpoint. They may be capitalizing on Diana's memory, but this doesn't detract from the spectacular vista. then drive back to Muscat.

A different experience. The goat and cattle market was well worth the early start and we always enjoy fresh food markets. Nizwa Fort and Castle is an interesting place that feels quite authentic. We added a visit to a rose oil farm that was well worth the extra cost. We did not see any other farms at Jabal al Akhdar as the tour was designed to finish at lunch time. Does not include breakfast or lunch.

An absolute MUST DO in your Oman Itinerary! Nasr our endearing and knowledgeable guide took us to the goat market early on, which was an amazing experience. He also took the time to take us to the perfect scenic locations for photos, took very good care of us throughout the trip and showed us the new and historic parts of Nizwa. He then took us through the scenic drive into the mountains where we had a wonderful time and were really awe-inspired by the location's natural beauty. His local knowledge helped us to be treated to Omani Dates, Halwa, Coffee and the world-famous Omani hospitality. It was a very special highlight of our trip.

Very interesting experience. Our guide was friendly and respectful, asked what we would like to focus on and pointed out areas of interest that we did not expect. Overall excellent tour. Our guide Muneer was excellent, friendly, flexible and knowledgeable. From Muscat the ride was long but the vehicle was comfortable and had good air conditioning. The fort and market were great and the views from the mountains were stunning. We had an excellent lunch on the mountains before returning ontime to our ship in Muscat. Highly recommend.

We went on a friday tour to witness the friday cattle market, witnessing the traditional selling of goats. Then after went to Jebel Akhdar known as the green mountain of Oman. We had a wonderful time, thanks to our excellent guide hamood. Highly recommended to everyone.
