Dharavi is a similar place in Mumbai which is locally underappreciated and usually frowned upon because of being a slum. But this is not a usual slum, this is a city in itself with a population of over 1 million, more than 7 schools, over 1500 single room factories, public and private hospitals, playgrounds, theatres, etc all congregated in an area of nearly 2.7 sqkms.
Kumbharwada is a pottery village in Dharavi formed by migrant communities from Gujarat in the late 19th century. These migrant families brought to Mumbai their age-old traditions and skills and made pottery one of the most famous local crafts of Dharavi. To sustain their craft and tradition, families have worked together and created spaces that can facilitate their skills. The focus of this post is to understand the various stages involved in creating the pots and other products at Kumbharwada, and how each step in the process affects the usage and characteristics of the spaces around.

Fantastic tour and experience
Absolutely outstanding excursion! I went in thinking I would see the accommodations of the residents. I left with a thorough understanding of the “city within a city” of Dhiravi. Bharti was excellent from start to finish. She was thorough in her explanations of the businesses that make the community thrive AND she spoke from the heart in regard to the social aspect of the community. I was touched by her authenticity and pride. She even opened up her home to me as I met several of her friends and relatives. I can’t say enough positive things about my experience. Visitors would be remiss not to do this tour. Oh and hope you get assigned to Bharti!

We met Rahul through the Bollywood tour as he was our guide and he told us he offers tours of Dharavi as he is from there. We came on the tour and it was very interesting. He showed us the commercial areas and residential. We got to see the different businesses like pottery, leather, plastic. We then got to come to his family home where we could meet his family and see the NGO school that he had created to help give local children extra education for free. And he used the tour company money to fund this. It was amazing to meet the children and teachers and we luckily came in time to get some Henna from the henna teacher! We were apprehensive to come on the tour at first but it was great to be with Rahul as he was local to here and we could see the good he is doing with tour money.

What made the experience so special was that she actually lives in the slum herself, which gave the entire tour a level of authenticity and personal insight you simply wouldn’t get otherwise. Bharti was so warm, open, and knowledgeable. She didn’t just show us around and she shared real stories, explained the community, and gave us a genuine understanding of daily life there. We had a wonderful afternoon with Rahul “Roy” as our guide. Roy was raised and still lives in Dharavi and has an intimate knowledge of the history, people, and industries that are there. We saw the 4 major economic drivers- plastics, cardboard, leather, and pottery. We saw the lives of people at work and at play. We thoroughly enjoyed our conversations with Roy over a delicious lunch. Cannot recommend this tour enough!
