Itinerary
Toprak Kala is dated in the Kushan period, around the 2nd and 3rd centuries CE and was the royal residence of the kings of the Khorezm. The place, having first served as a Royal sanctuary, was briefly abandoned in the early 4th century and then after some restorations, was used as an administrative citadel for the city.
Guldursun Kala is a fortified town. The exterior walls and towers date to the 12th century CE. Much ancient and medieval pottery and many bronze items and coins were found within the site during archeological excavations. The coins indicate that the last period of occupation is related to the year 1220, during the rule of Muhammad Khorezmshah and the time of the Mongol invasion of Khorezm.
Janbas Kala has one of the most archaic fortification systems dating from that Early Antique period. All four of its flanking walls are in relatively good condition, reaching in places up to 20 meters in height. Janbas Kala differs from most of the other fortresses in having no towers on its outer walls. This meant that the fort was potentially vulnerable from an attack on the lower sections of its walls. The military architects had attempted to overcome this design weakness by including some steeply inclined loopholes so that some archers could fire down along the face of the walls.
Ayaz Kala is the one of the most spectacular fortresses in the area. There are in fact, not one but three fortresses clustered together on and around a prominent hill at the Eastern end of the Sultan-Uiz-dahg range. The fortress provided defense against nomad raids. A gravel road leads up to a small cluster of Yurts, a tourist rest center overlooking a shallow but picturesque lake. It was probable founded in the Afrighid period, sometime around the 7th to 8th Centuries CE… There is a lake – Akchakul Lake between Toprak and Ayaz Kala. There are also Yurt camps and restaurants next to the lake where you can enjoy local meals and drinks. In summer time it is possible to enjoy swimming and sand bath in Akchakul Lake.
Kizil Kala was originally constructed in the Late Antique period, 1st to 4th centuries CE, but was abandoned and then rebuilt in the 12th-13th centuries on the eve of the Mongol invasions. There is some debate about how this fortress may have been used in ancient times, with some scholars proposing that it was a garrison barracks for troops, whilst others suggest it was an early example of the many fortified manor houses that were typical of Khorezm in the early medieval periods After visiting all seven fortresses, it is about 90 minutes to drive back to Khiva. Our driver may drop you off in Urgench Airport, Urgench / Khiva Train Station or in your hotel both in Khiva or Urgench at the end of the trip
Duman Kala composed of three adjacent sections – a square-shaped western enclosure with corner towers; a smaller square-shaped citadel; and an irregular four-sided northern enclosure, the remains of which can no longer been seen. The western citadel is the best-preserved section, especially along its northern side, but only small section of the eastern enclosure remains
In BC, the Amudarya (Ox) flowed in two directions, the first being the Akcha River and the second being the Suvyorgan River. The reason why this part of the river is called Akcha was the Akchakhan Fortress on the left bank of the present-day Akchakol, and it still exists today. The name of the castle is named after the ancient queen of Khorezmshahs Akchahon. After the river changed its course, the present-day Akchakul Lake was formed and it retained its name. The lake has beautiful landscape around together with fishery house and restaurant.

The guide was very kind. I was moved by the magnificence that we cannot feel in Japan!
Good evening, huge thanks for sharing your impressions, highly appreciate that
I had a great day with Olimjon, exploring 7 ancient fortresses in karakalpakstan. Olimjon was very helpful at answering our questions and providing context to the ruins. I also appreciated that he gave us some self exploring time so we could take our time appreciating the areas. I recommend this tour as a lovely excursion out of Khiva ancient city.
Hello, thanks for sharing your lovely feedback, highly appreciate that, hope to see you again in Khiva!
This was a wonder day. Our guide was incredible. He had so much knowledge of Uzbek history and of the fortresses. He was also a very safe driver. He took us to a local restaurant for lunch which was fantastic. The fortresses themselves were incredible to see and we were provided audio which gave us the history of the fortresses. Overall an incredible day! Thank you!
Dear my friend, huge thanks for sharing your impressions, hghly appreciate that, thanks
Exciting time to visit fortresses together with family despite cold temperature outside. Camel riding is another fun time.
We booked a private tour to see all of the Kalas. The tour was good. We ended up with another group travelling in a separate car but with the same guide. This wasn't really what we booked and meant we didnt have the amount of time we wanted at each site. We booked a private tour for a reason as we like to have time at each site and be able to decide where we stay longer or shorter times. The car was a standard saloon car with AC that didnt quite work. It also meant that at the final kala we couldn't drive up to the site and walking path. We did the last Kala on our own, the guide stayed at the camp site. It would have been good to have more indepth historical information about the sites spanning the different periods of history. If you drive this could be an easy self drive day trip.
Dear Simranjit, Thanks for sharing your valuable impressions. Will definitely consider it for improvement purposes.
Khiva Fortress is fabulous, containing much to see and be in awe of! Beautiful monuments, informative museums, history everywhere! The fortress is well kept, clean and tidy. Worth a visit!
Huge thanks for sharing your best memories!
As a solo female traveler I felt completely safe with Sarvar. I was sent some audio files about the forts before going, but Sarvar is still learning English so the conversation was limited and he didn't know a great deal about the sites we visited, but he was easy to be with. You do have to walk alone to the sites and the last one is a bit of a trek. Lunch was a pleasant enough roadside restaurant but I was a bit sad there was no fried fish by a lake like other reviews have mentioned. I'm glad I went and it waa really nice to get away from the city, but if you're by yourself it's a very long day and I think a half day tour might be more enjoyable.
The owner, Olimjon, was really courteous and helpful. Not only did he personally accompany us to see the fortresses, but he also bought us train tickets, which in Uzbekistan are not easy to buy. Very competent, speaks excellent English, precise and punctual. Highly recommended
Huge thanks for sharing your impressions :) hope to see you again!
We had had contact with this agency through friends who had already traveled with them. There are no better reviews than those of our loved ones. And they were right! We spent a very nice day visiting all these beautiful sites! Organization at the top, we were often alone to visit, we were able to make the most of it! The car was comfortable, the driver very nice. 5/5
Huge thanks for your lovely feedback, highly appreciate it 😊
Great day trip to see 7 fortresses with a good English driver who gave me some explanations each time.
Dear Carine Huge thanks for your lovely feedback Hope to see you again, Olimjon
