Itinerary
Debre Libanos is an important monastery founded by the renowned 13th century Saintt Tekle Haymanot. He prayed in a cave near the current monastery for 29 years
Before driving back to Addis Ababa, we will stop at the Jemma River Gorge, one of the tributaries of the Blue Nile river, and see the 1000 meter drop to the valley below. We will walk downhill to the 17th century Portuguese Bridge, where we will see many wild birds, as well as one of Ethiopia's most charismatic mammals, the Gelada, also known as the bleeding heart baboon. The Portuguese Bridge, repaired over the years, makes a pretty picture. In the rainy season, the gushing cascade of water beneath it makes it even more impressive. Birds we may see include banded barbets, black headed forest orioles, white billed starlings, red billed starlings, white winged cliff chats, white backed black tits, white cheeked turacos, and hemprich's hornbills. After leaving the Gorge we will drive back to Addis Ababa.
