A mid-18th-century Baroque sanctuary founded in 1740 by Father Luis Felipe Neri de Alfaro, inspired by Jerusalem’s Holy Sepulchre. It became a spiritual retreat for penance exercises and is famous for its vivid murals by Antonio Martínez de Pocasangre, earning it the nickname “Sistine Chapel of Mexico.” The sanctuary played a key role during Mexico’s Independence when Miguel Hidalgo took the banner of the Virgin of Guadalupe from here. In 2008, it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site along with San Miguel de Allende.

Legend says a friar’s dog discovered the spring that inspired the founding of San Miguel. Once a vital community site, the stone basins were used by locals for generations. Today, the area remains a peaceful spot with trees, fountains, and adjacent cultural spaces offering art classes. It’s a hidden gem where history, legend, and daily life intersect in charming simplicity.
Built in 1709 and redesigned in the late 1800s, this parish church is the iconic symbol of San Miguel. Local stonemason Zeferino Gutiérrez transformed its façade into a stunning neo-Gothic masterpiece, inspired by European cathedrals but with unique regional touches. Its towering pink spires are visible throughout the city and draw visitors from around the world. Inside, intricate altars and sacred art reflect centuries of devotion. The Parroquia is the spiritual and architectural heart of the town.

Mario picked us up promptly and respected our wishes on what we wanted to do on our private tour to San Miguel De Allende. On the way there we stopped at the protective town of San Miguel and the Sanctuary of Jesús Nazareno de Atotonilco which is in the outskirts of town. The fortified town, first established in the 16th century to protect the Royal Route inland, reached its apogee in the 18th century when many of its outstanding religious and civic buildings were built in the style of the Mexican Baroque. Some of these buildings are masterpieces of the style that evolved in the transition from Baroque to neoclassical. It consists of a large church, and several smaller chapels, all decorated with oil paintings by Rodriguez Juárez and mural paintings by Miguel Antonio Martínez de Pocasangre. Because of its location, San Miguel de Allende acted as a melting pot where Spaniards, Creoles and Amerindians exchanged cultural influences while the Sanctuary of Jesús Nazareno de Atotonilco constitutes an exceptional example of the exchange between European and Latin American cultures. Its architecture and interior decoration testify to the influence of Saint Ignacio de Loyola’s doctrine. We then drove to a mirador, a viewing area, of the entire town of San Miguel de Allende. So beautiful. From afar the lovely Parroquia de San Miguel Arcangel stood out. We went down to the church to see it up close. The iconic Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel features a neo-Gothic pink stone facade built between 1880 and 1890. Designed by indigenous stonemason Zeferino Gutiérrez, it replaced the modest 17th-century baroque structure that was originally constructed after the town's founding in 1542. We were given some time to enjoy the plaza nearby with plenty of shopping and food. We then headed back to our hotel in Guanajuato. Great experience!

Our guide Ramses was great. I thought we should have had some more time in San Miguel. We had an hour to eat and look around.
Hi Kathryn, thank you very much for your kind words about Ramses — we’re glad you enjoyed his guidance! We’d just like to clarify for future travelers that this tour is exclusively focused on San Miguel de Allende, where guests spend the entire day exploring the city at a relaxed pace, with ample free time to walk around, eat, and enjoy the destination. It’s possible there may have been some confusion with a different experience and that Kathryn’s review is for another tour, not this one, but we truly appreciate your feedback. Best regards!
We booked this excursion on short notice, exchanging it for a walking tour (only) of San Miguel de Allende after realizing that getting to/from San Miguel de Allende from where we were staying in Guanajuato was more complicated than we thought. It ended up being a happy turn of events. As guide and driver, Ramses and Reyes from Guanajuato VIP were wonderful. The drive was pleasant and because we were in a vehicle, we stopped a couple places we wouldn’t otherwise have. And honestly, unless you’re using the inexpensive bus option, the cost of this combo transportation + tour is not much different than the two components individually. If you’re looking for an “easy button” option, this package is highly recommended.
