Itinerary
Begin your journey at the birthplace of Alexander the Great, where ancient Pella served as the magnificent capital of the Macedonian Kingdom. This state-of-the-art museum houses extraordinary mosaics that once adorned royal palaces, including the famous Dionysus mosaic and the spectacular lion hunt scene. Your private guide will reveal how this cosmopolitan city shaped young Alexander's worldview and showcase artifacts that paint a vivid picture of daily life in ancient Macedonia's golden age.
Step into the heart of Macedonia's original capital at this remarkable museum complex. Here, cutting-edge technology brings ancient Aigai to life through immersive displays and multimedia presentations. You'll explore the royal quarter's remains while learning about the political intrigue, cultural achievements, and military innovations that made Macedonia a dominant force in the ancient world.
Explore the actual ruins of the palace where Philip II held court and where the fate of the ancient world was decided. Walk through the same halls where Alexander received his education from Aristotle, where diplomatic missions were received, and where the plans for conquering the Persian Empire were conceived. The panoramic views across the Macedonian plains provide a breathtaking backdrop to stories of royal ceremonies and political machinations.
After our walk to get to Philip's Palace we need some energy. Quick stop in Vergina for lunch!
The crown jewel of your journey awaits. Descend into the underground museum that houses the most significant archaeological discovery in Greece - the intact tomb of Philip II, father of Alexander the Great. Stand before the solid gold larnax containing the king's remains, marvel at the exquisite golden wreath of oak leaves, and witness treasures that remained hidden for over 2,000 years. The tomb's original frescoes, armor, and royal regalia create an atmosphere so profound that visitors often describe it as a spiritual experience.

We took the private tour with Yannis who was our driver and guide. The trip was amazing and Yannis explained a lot about the history and culture of Macedonia. He was very friendly, polite and safe driver. We really appreciated his knowledge and attention to detail. He was also flexible with the schedule during the day allowing us to decide how long we wanted to stay at each site. The sites and museums were remarkable especially the Museum of Royal Tombs at Aigai! This should be on everyone’s bucket list for places to see in Greece. We were so impressed. We highly recommend Transporter Tours. Big thanks to Yannis!
Many thanks for your kind words, it was a pleasure to spend the day with you and show you our most important archaeological sites. All the best!
My husband and I greatly appreciated the kindness and professionalism of Yannick. He took care of all the details of this tour and provided us with all the information to enjoy the visit to these splendid archaeological sites. The tombs of Vergina are worth the trip by themselves.
I've been to Greece a couple of times, but never had a private tour quite like this. We were a group of three friends and had a blast on a full day of visits to some of Greece's most iconic antiquities. Yanni, the host, was fun, social and very Greek! Make sure you ask him about food/drinks recommendations, he knows the area inside out.
Many thanks for your review , it was great meeting you and i am so happy you enjoyed our tour!
The route of Alexander the Great is definitely worth doing. John picked us up from Thessaloniki and drove us to Pella and Verghina. During the journey he gave us really interesting information about both sites and we also heard about local legends and stories. So when we arrived at the museums and the archeological sites, he gave us some space and time to visit the places on our own, which was really important because we had the luxury of experiencing the site by ourselves and all the information that we had heard about during the journey quickly fell into place. By the end of our visit we had formed quite a good understanding of the local history. John also gave us amazing tips about places to visit in Thessaloniki! Definitely worth it!
