Itinerary
Please meet your guide at the designated meeting point for a prompt early morning departure. By starting our journey ahead of the rush, we’ll ensure you beat the heavy crowds and enjoy a much cooler, more serene experience at the sites. We recommend arriving 15 minutes early to ensure a smooth start to your adventure.
Step back in time at the Archaeological Park of Pompeii, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most evocative places on Earth. Frozen in time by the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 AD, this vast site offers a unique window into ancient Roman life. Walk through remarkably preserved streets, explore opulent villas adorned with vibrant frescoes, and marvel at the majestic temples and theaters that once formed the heart of this thriving city.
Enter the city through Porta Marina, the most monumental of Pompeii’s seven gates. Walk in through this ancient gateway, originally designed for travelers arriving from the sea, and explore with your guide the impressive double-arch structure that separated pedestrians from carriages. As you pass through these massive stone walls, you’ll immediately feel the grandeur of the Roman Empire welcoming you into the streets of the past.
Step into the Forum, the monumental heart of ancient Pompeii. Explore with your guide the remains of the city's grandest temples and public buildings that once buzzed with political and commercial life. Walk in the footsteps of Roman citizens across this expansive square, where you can admire the iconic silhouette of Mt. Vesuvius looming in the distance—the perfect spot to capture the essence of this frozen city.
The Macellum of Pompeii was located on the Forum and as the provision market of Pompeii was one of the focal points of the ancient city. The building was constructed in several phases. When the earthquake of 62 CE destroyed large parts of Pompeii, the Macellum was also damaged.
The Forum Baths are located behind the Temple of Jupiter and date back to the years immediately after the founding of the colony of veterans by General Silla (80 BC). Women's and men's quarters had separate entrances. The men's section presents an apodyterium (dressing room), used also as a tepidarium (for medium temperature baths), frigidarium (for cold baths) and calidarium (for hot baths). Like many buildings in Pompeii, the baths were heavily damaged during the earthquake of 62 AD.
Dominated by the Vesuvius with its statues of Jupiter, Juno and Minerva, the temple was the Capitolium, similar to the one located in the Ancient Rome. The statues were highly placed to be visible to those passing in the Forum.
The Lupanar of Pompeii is the most famous brothel in the ruined Roman city of Pompeii. It is of particular interest for the erotic paintings on its walls. Lupanar is Latin for "brothel". The Pompeii lupanar is also known as Lupanare Grande.
The House of the Faun (Casa del Fauno) is one of the largest and most luxurious private residences in Pompeii, occupying an entire city block. Named after the iconic bronze statue of a dancing faun found in its main atrium, the house is a masterpiece of Roman architecture and Hellenistic influence. It is most famous for housing the magnificent Alexander Mosaic, which depicts the battle between Alexander the Great and Darius III of Persia. With its two peristyle gardens and intricate floor mosaics, it remains a powerful symbol of the immense wealth and sophisticated taste of the city's elite.
Via dell’Abbondanza was the ancient main street (decumanus maximus) of ancient Pompeii, which ran across the city in the direction east/west from the Forum to the Porta Sarno. In ancient times the street was crowded and noisy with many shops, workshops ("officinae”), cafes, snack-bars and restaurants for food and drink.
The Basilica, with its extension of 1,500 square meters, was the most sumptuous building of the Forum, and its space was used to carry out business and for the administration of justice.
The Large Theater of Pompeii was built from the Romans on the slope of a hill located in the area; they took advantage of the natural depression of the mountain to create a majesty auditorium divided into 5 sectors. On the stage were played tragedies of the Greco-Roman traditions.
A you exit from the Archeological Park of Pompeii, enjoy free time for lunch between your explorations. Whether you choose to grab a quick traditional snack or sit down at a local restaurant. This is the perfect moment to relax and recharge before we head toward the slopes of Mt. Vesuvius.
Reach the crater's edge at 1.280 mt to admire a breathtaking panorama on the Gulf of Naples. The surface of the path is uneven, but it' ll be well worth it. Following the devastating eruption, it was named after the Roman God of the Flame and Metal Forgery – Vulcan
Walk in the clouds as you reach the summit and explore with your guide the rim of the great crater. From this incredible vantage point, you will be rewarded with a world-class view overlooking the Bay of Naples. Marvel at the breathtaking panorama of the sparkling Mediterranean, the city below, and the distant islands of Capri and Ischia, all from the top of Europe’s most famous volcano.
After an unforgettable day of history and heights, settle into your comfortable coach for the return trip to Sorrento. Explore with your guide the final highlights of the journey as you descend the volcanic slopes, enjoying one last view overlooking the Bay of Naples. It is the perfect time to unwind, review your photos, and relax as we bring you back to your original departure point.

A great experience being amongst the ruins of Pompeii and hearing the true story from a very knowledgeable guide and also seeing inside the museum. The only negative is a bit more free time to explore the ruins on your own would make it feel less like a school trip The climbing of Mount Vesuvius was an amazing experience although quite strenuous. Altogether a good trip.
Nello was an excellent tour guide from early morning gathering to late afternoon drop off. Luciano was an impressive and safe driver. We have a LOT of respect for his skills. Isabelle gave an interesting and story filled tour of Pompeii. The tours were delivered in English. Nello taught us Italian words and phrases throughout the trip. He told us about local history, plants, cuisine and legends. He let us rest after we hiked up Vesuvius at our own pace — a welcome respite after hours in the heat. Pompeii was mind-blowing. So glad we did this with a guided tour. So very glad we did not try to drive anywhere!
The tour was excellent from start to finish. Daniela was so welcoming and gracious. I enjoyed the information she shared on the bus ride. The tour of Pompeii was phenomenal. Lulu was great— very funny and made the tour easy even in the summer heat. I could go back for two more days to see and learn more from her about the city. The hike up Mount Vesuvius was another highlight. Beautiful views and fun to learn its history and see it up close. Luigi was our bus driver and I had a of confidence in him. I don’t usually do well in cars near heights, but I felt really relaxed with him at the wheel.

In short I would give them 100 out of 5 stars. Now I will tell you why. - Meeting location - easy to find in the town center you will easily spot the guide. - Information - even on the short walk from the Iamme office to the bus the guide (Max) provided interesting information about the city. - Comfort - the bus was clean and air conditioned which was great because it was extremely hot out. Also, Max made sure everyone picked up enough water and told us where the clean toilets were. We did Pompeii in the morning and Vesuvius after lunch (this place does not have clean bathrooms). - Information - while on the bus Max gave excellent information then Monica was our guide in the ruins. Both Monica and Max made sure we saw the most interesting things and always made it back to our bus. At Vesuvius, we were able to go at our own pace which was wonderful because it’s quite a hike to get to the top. - Bus ride - Max made sure people that might suffer from motion sickness were seated comfortably which was super wonderful because I was able to enjoy the whole day without getting sick. - Lunch - we opted to get the recommended lunch for 18 euro and it was convenient and delicious. I highly recommend this tour.

The early starts 7:30 was worth it as we were one of the first coaches to arrive at Pompei. Great information from the tour leader and Pompei guide. Good rest before we moved onto Vesuvius. At Vesuvius we were given good advice from the tour guide re the walk up and down and plenty of time. Its a tough walk up for older people and the walk down takes its toll on your knees, but we had time to rest. Really enjoyed the tour.
Dear Traveler, Thank you so much for your great review! We are glad to hear that the early start was worth it and allowed you to beat the crowds at Pompeii. Thank you for joining us, and we hope to welcome you on another fantastic tour in the future! Best regards, The IAMME IA! Gray Line Team
Very professional treatment and interesting tour
The experience is excellent, although on a very hot day like ours, it is a bit more challenging. Daniela, our guide, was very good! And the guide we had in Pompeii, Luigi, was also great! Daniela was very helpful from start to finish!
