Portoferraio Walking Tour with Guide 2 Hours

Description
The three Landmarks of Portoferraio are the Romans, the Medici and Napoleon. Your guide will be able to connect these grand periods during the tour. This is a complete cultural experience without many dates and names but a lot of anecdotes, curiosities and some dark details of The Medici family, that founded Cosmopoli (Portoferraio). The tour offers amazing photographic view points. During this walk you will be able to see the old town mounting and descending the pink stoned stairs, where you can see the 18th century Theatre, the XVI century barracks, the old bread factory and the churches of the White and Black Guelfi papal party.

Itinerary
The fort was build by Cosimo I of The Medici family in 1548, it is one of the landmarks of the town. The structure is an amazing military architecture, just to mention some small details all the loopholes have a distinct direction to be able to see the sea and the land from every angle. The Fort can be seen from the outside or can be visited internally, where you will see the galleries that were turned into the quarters of the Royal Marine during World War II. There are also the XVI century underground tunnels and the beltway that offer astonishing views on the archipelago.
Napoleon Buonaparte stood in his first exile, 1814, on the island for 10 months, he was recognised as Elba sovereign of the island, his main residence was the Palazzina dei Mulini, in the old town between the fortresses which comprehends his apartments, his sister's apartment and a lovely garden overlooking the sea inside the walls.
In the downtown, at the bottom of the fishing harbour, you will see the Tower della Linguella which is the focal point of the fortification on the sea protecting the harbour. The tower is an elegant Renaissance building surrounded by the ruin of a roman villa, next to the archaeological museum with artifacts of the Roman and Etruscan civilization.

The tour guide was very knowledgeable about the city and its history. She made the tour exceptional even with the hilly walking.
Lot of uphill steps and incline. Wear comfortable shoes and bring water. Marcia was a great guide. Ver informative.
The guide was very knowledgeable, friendly and entertaining. It was the best tour on our cruise. We learned a lot about the area and its very colorful history beyond Napolean's time there and his escape.

Excellent guide, full of historical info and insights that allowed us to appreciate the area much more. Flexible and giving full value
I thoroughly enjoyed this tour. The guide Marica was personable & the tour started on time. My husband was having knee issues, so we gad to go a little slower. Marica was very accommodating & kept this in mind. The details she gave brought the sites to life. Reserving & paying via Viator was very convenient.
Well informed and nicely paced tour, with a friendly and knowledgable guide. A great insight into the history of Portoferraio.
This was one of our favorite activities while staying on Elba. We learned so much from Marica and considered this experience completely invaluable. Within a few minutes, Marica was able to pick up on our interest in history, and catered the tour to that interest. She took us inside the old fortress, taught us about so many different periods of history, and was kind and warm the entire time. Marica gracefully answered our endless questions and sparked so much curiosity and discussion for later on. Her expert knowledge, desire to teach, and warmth make Marica a really lovely tour guide-Highly recommend talking a walk around town with her!
