Pompeii, Herculaneum and Vesuvius Hike Small-Group from Sorrento

Description
Explore Vesuvio, the giant volcano dominating the Bay of Naples. Drive 3,000 feet through the old crater, then hike 25 minutes along volcanic gravel to the summit. Peer into the 700-ft deep, 2,000-ft wide crater and enjoy panoramic views of the Sorrento Peninsula and the islands of Capri, Ischia, and Procida. Pompeii is one of Italy’s most stunning archaeological sites, an open-air museum where visitors can step back over 2,000 years to a city buried in ash until 1748. Herculaneum, Pompeii’s smaller sister, offers perfectly preserved patrician villas, wood, ropes, mosaics, frescoes, and brickwork—a miracle considering the 500°C volcanic flows that destroyed it.

Visitors experience the city much as it existed more than 2000 years ago.

We had an awesome day experiencing all 3 sites: toured Pompeii with an Archeologist, the fabulous Roberta; hiked Vesuvius at our leisure; and had another tour in Herculaneum, again with Roberta. We were at each venue for 2 hours, which was plenty, although Pompeii certainly could be explored for more time since it covers way more ground than we visited. Our driver, Alberto, also fabulous, took us to a restaurant after Vesuvius, so we were able to eat a quick lunch before heading to Herculaneum. We appreciated the flexibility that came with having a semi-private tour. We actually had the van to ourselves, since there were only 6 of us, which made it a private tour. Roberta has extensive knowledge about the archaeological sites and shared it all with enthusiasm. Our time with her flew by! Being able to hike to the top of Vesuvius was truly amazing! The path is gravel, so one must be careful of their footing both up and on the way down, but it is doable for most who are able. The views are stunning! We highly recommend this tour and hope you enjoy it as much as we did!
