Description

Lypky is the de facto government quarter of Ukraine hosting the buildings of Parliament, Presidential Administration and Government. Lypky became known only recently since the 19th century. During that time, it already became known as an elite district. Many houses here were built by German architects in the Art Nouveau style. On this tour, visit the Alley of Heavenly Hundred Heroes, dedicated to the Revolution of Dignity, Horodetskyi Street, with buildings in the Art Nouveau style, the Ivan Franko Theatre, the famous House with Chimeras, Lyuteranska Street, where the German community lived and where the Lutheran church is located.

The house was built by Vladislaw Horodecki, a Kyiv architect-romanticist, as a rental property, and today is known as The House with Chimeras. The house sands on a steep slope, and has three-story a cellar as viewed from the street side, and six-story from the opposite side. Its attractive appearance is primarily due to its concrete decorations depicting elephants, rhinoceros, antelopes, lizards, mythological nymphs astride fishes ect.

The ensemble of the National Bank of Ukraine has been the financial centre of Kyiv since olden times. At first, the office the office of the State Bank occupied a Classicism-styled two-story house. Later, a new two-story building was erected on its right.

The Government Building occupied by the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, is one of Kyiv’s most imposing buildings. This huge structure occupies 235,000 m², and is a fine example of the wide employment of classical architectural heritage.

This is considered to be the most harmonic of oll the administrative buildings erected during Soviet rule. The external decoration displays the simplicity and clarity of Classicism. Beside the portico are sculpture groups featuring representatives of the Ukrainian people. The building is terminated with a glass dome an a spire on which flutters the blue and yellow Ukrainian flag.

As far back as 1744, The Empress Elizabeth Petrovna, whilst residing in Kyiv, chose this site for the building of a palace for the Tsar’s visiting. The Palace stood in a picturesque setting affording fine views of trans-Dnipro area. From here, it was easy to reach the Lavra sanctuaries.
