The street of Khari Baoli might be the most lively and fascinating piece of Old Delhi. It is certainly the most pungent, because it hosts one of the world’s largest wholesale spice markets. The myriad bright and wonderful spices that enliven Indian cooking are displayed in large mounds and traded in giant sacks. Walking through the market is an experience in itself, but it is hard to find a vantage point from which to survey its full glory.oli is a busy Spice market in the heart of Old Delhi
The Fatehpuri Mosque is a 17th-century mosque located at the western end of the oldest street of Chandni Chowk,The mosque is built with red sandstone on a large scale and is surmounted by a single dome. This mosque is a beautiful specimen of the magnificence of Mughal architecture and stands as a silent spectator, witnessing all historical events right from the Mughal and British periods till date. Flanked by towering minarets, the mosque has a traditional design with the prayer hall having seven-arched openings. Among the seven arches, the central arch is the highest. The mosque has single and double-storied apartments on the sides.
The Red Fort Complex was built as the palace fort of Shahjahanabad – the new capital of the fifth Mughal Emperor of India, Shah Jahan. Named for its massive enclosing walls of red sandstone, it is adjacent to an older fort, the Salimgarh, built by Islam Shah Suri in 1546, with which it forms the Red Fort Complex.
n the heart of Old Delhi, Chandni Chowk is a busy shopping area with markets full of spices, dried fruit, silver jewelry and vivid saris, while the narrow side streets are crowded with tiny shops selling essential oils, stationery and traditional Indian sweets. Nearby, the vast Mughal-era Red Fort now houses a museum complex, and the 17th-century Jama Masjid is a huge red-sandstone mosque with towering minarets.
The ninth Sikh Guru, Guru Tegh Bahadur was beheaded here on 11 November 1675 on the order of Aurangzeb. Before his body could be quartered and exposed to public view, it was stolen under the cover of darkness by one of his disciples, Lakhi Shah Vanjara, who then burnt his house to cremate the Guru's body. This place is marked by another gurdwara, Gurdwara Rakab Ganj Sahib. The severed head ("Sis" in Hindi or Punjabi) of Guru Tegh Bahadur was brought to Anandpur Sahib by Bhai Jaita, another disciple of the Guru. Before it was cremated, he took it to Ambala city for a night and there is another gurdwara as well by the name of Shri Sis Ganj Gurdwara near there local vegetable market, Gobind Rai, who would later become Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth and last Guru of the Sikhs.

Wow! Genuinely a life experience. First, our guide Vijay was an absolute delight. He is kind, calm, navigates through the city and with others in a very courteous manner, and has very clearly done his research on the information he shares. Absolute wealth of information. We go to take the metro, a rickshaw and bike cart to get around. He even through in an extra step away from the scheduled tour to talk about the Red Fort. He knew when to ask if we wanted photos, allowed us time to explore something we might see in passing, and was very flexible. Definite highlight for myself was the Sikh Temple. Very interesting to not only learn the history of the religion, but it’s very sad history in Delhi. But the most impactful was the kitchen they manage to feed thousands every day for free! Awe inspiring. The markets were amazing and packed. The Jain tunnels and shops were unexpected. Highly recommend any of Vijay’s tours. You will walk away enlightened.
