“Dr Ali” was our tour guide and bus driver and the tour was like something from Fawlty Towers from beginning to end. He arrived 20 minutes late despite tour instructions asking you to be there 20 minutes early. We were all waiting for him in 30 degrees heat and when he eventually turned up there was not a single word of apology or explanation. Dr Ali’s bus was filthy, he didn’t look very clean and he mumbled unintelligibly while driving his rickety bus at tortoise speed. His delay meant we had limited time at mount vernon which was very frustrating. An expensive mistake.
The home of the first President of the United States was very special. So much history and knowledge that we learned from that tour.
Great to experience Mt Vernon. Disappointed to miss seeing all of home because it was being renovated but at least I knew it ahead of time. This was a first /last opportunity for me. Nice restaurant and gift shop. Time allowed was good.
It was a great and very interesting place to visit. Our driver and tour guide was very informative and extremely obliging. He tried his utmost to take us back to our hotel in spite of numerous road closures. The tour was very well organised.
My wife and I did this tour and probably would not have gone at all had we known the mansion is actually being renovated. They presented a virtual tour and we walked through two rooms, one actually outside the mansion. Whole experience kind of disappointing.
The tour of Mount Vernon was great. The transportation experience from DC was below expectations. It was requested we show up at least 15 minutes early. Driver parked a block away and walked around the vehicle, walked all four corners of the intersection, washed his windshield, sat in the vehicle and then finally pulled up to the pickup point a little past the scheduled time. Drive was uneventful except for mundane descriptions by driver. We did not get to stop at Christ Church as described on the tour package description
Driver was knowledgeable, animated and on time. His name was Charles. He’s excellent! Washington ‘s mansion, grounds and burial place were incredible places to see. We ate at the farm to table restaurant enjoying Washington’s favorite selections. The tribute to the contribution of slaves was very important and moving!
A nice trip to Mount Vernon from DC / perfect if you only have about 5 hours, Trip includes transport from the Hyatt hotel in DC (near the Capitol). Entry ticket and tour of Mount Vernon estate included. Free time available after the tour for lunch (not included) and to walk around the grounds.
The trip to and from Mount Vernon with Co was great. He provided us with useful information for the tour as well as general DC travel logistics. The open time on the grounds of Mt. Vernon was great balanced with a small group tour of the mansion. They could explain about the many other buildings on the grounds to provide tourists with a fuller picture. That is feedback for the museum itself. Viator did a great job.
Our driver Bobby was gregarious and knowledgeable. We had plenty of time to see Mount Vernon. The house is currently undergoing renovations and maintenance but we still saw all the rooms. The view from the back porch is remarkable. We saw the old tomb, the newer tomb, but I think the lost moving was the burial ground for the enslaved people of Mount Vernon. The graves are not marked but a number of them have been outlined with string and people are leaving painted rocks to commemorate the dead. Very touching. The gift shop is huge with very good selections of many different types of quality items. The restaurant, like the other museum restaurants we went to in DC is very average. The cheeseburger was - I’m not sure what it was. Icky. not enough gluten free options, although they offer a gf bun. I didn’t feel confident in their cross contamination protocol. They have a variety of bottled drinks, chips, desserts, etc. You won’t starve, but it’s mediocre and overpriced. Still worth a trip to see this important historical landmark.
