Minca Tour

My family of four visited Minca for the first time, and it was an unforgettable experience. Our tour guide, Mario, was outstanding. He was knowledgeable, friendly, and shared so much about the history, culture, and nature of the area. Since we visited just a few days after the presidential elections, there were very few tourists, so we had many of the attractions almost entirely to ourselves. Our first stop was a local coffee farm. I'm not usually a coffee drinker, but the coffee was so delicious that we ended up buying two bags (COP 30,000 each). Don't expect a large commercial operation, the coffee is produced in a very traditional, artisanal way, which made the experience even more authentic. Next, we visited a hidden waterfall. We spent about 30 minutes there. The water was very cold, but it was incredibly refreshing and therapeutic. My children thought it was too cold to get in, but I loved it. We were lucky to have the place almost to ourselves. I was told that during the high season, it gets so crowded that finding space to swim can be difficult. After that, we stopped for lunch, and this was the only disappointing part of the tour, which is why I'm giving it four stars instead of five. We paid an extra COP 10,000 per plate to upgrade to fish, but my husband and I received the smallest tilapia I've ever been served. It honestly felt overpriced for the portion and I hot very upset. The standard lunch includes chicken or pork, and my children's chicken portions were also quite small. We don't eat large meals, and even we left hungry, so I recommend planning to have another meal after the tour. At the same restaurant, we participated in an artisan chocolate workshop, which was one of our favorite activities. We sampled a variety of chocolates and learned about the chocolate-making process. We also purchased a natural chocolate facial product for COP 30,000. One of the things I loved most about Minca was its peaceful atmosphere. It's a place where you can truly reconnect with nature, relax, and let go of stress. Mario even guided us through a simple mindfulness exercise to help us appreciate the beauty and tranquility around us, which made the experience even more meaningful. The entire tour was conducted in English, making it easy to follow and enjoy. Despite the small lunch portions, I highly recommend this tour-especially if you're looking to experience the natural beauty and peaceful spirit of Minca. If you're planning this tour, be sure to wear comfortable shoes and bring cash to support the local businesses and artisans.

My guide’s name was...

My guide’s name was Mario. He came in on his day off to do the tour. He’s a beautiful soul and showed me so much more than the tour described. The coffee farm was disappointing though. He explained the process but there wasn’t much to see. The waterfall was beautiful and almost nobody there! The hike is steep and rocky, but we took lots of breaks, about 1.5 miles to the waterfall and then another 20 minutes (maybe half a mile) to the restaurant. I wore Teva sandals during the whole tour (I had other shoes in my backpack in case I needed to change) and it was doable but felt a little unsteady coming down from the waterfall. The lunch was delicious, I ordered the chicken. The cacao/chocolate experience was cool. It was a nice little tour for the price.

We love Mario!

My partner and I were so pleased with this trip! It’s a must do in Minca. Despite it being his day off, Mario agreed to take us around Minca all day. He was full of funny anecdotes, interesting facts about the local flora and fauna, an unbridled love for life and an appreciation of all minca has to offer. He really made the day what it was, and we left the experience laughing and happy. Super worth it!

Immersive and Amazing Tour!

Tour was amazing! So immersive, fun, and informative. Mario was my tour guide, he did a fantastic job tailoring the tour to what I wanted to experience. I was a solo traveler and the only one on the tour, but it was super fun and Mario was a great guide! I felt safe everywhere we went. We went to local coffee farm, a beautiful waterfall, lunch at a hostel with incredible views and learned about local chocolate… and got to try some! Absolutely would recommend this tour to anyone who wants an immersive experience in Minca. Involved lots of hiking, be prepared for the outdoors!

A taste of Minca

I had an incredible hike with Mario(MAR-hero). His knowledge of the local history of Indigenous, and plant life was expansive to say the least. He warned me of dangerous spiders, and which plants to avoid. The hike to the coffee farm was steep but manageable. We took a few breaks for me to catch my breath, which I appreciated. Mario showed me the Indigenous method of coffee farming, where the beans are harvested, cleaned, and roasted. The Waterfall was magical. I hiked barefoot down to the private section by the farm. The hike was a gentle walk. The meal at the Restaurant/hostel was delicious. As a corn soup connoisseur I was shocked and delighted by the flavor. The chocolate experience was fun and educational. Mario was a great tour guide. The ride to and from the hotel was pricey but I didn’t want to stress getting to the meeting point on time.

Impressive nature, but our tour was simplified

With a 4.8 rating, our expectations were high. Maybe other experiences differ, but this was ours. Overall, we felt the tour was overpriced for what was delivered (COP 365,000 + COP 120,000 transport + purchased local products). The optional transport, in particular, seems excessive, considering that public options between Santa Marta and Minca cost around COP 10,000. The itinerary did not fully match the description. The eco-walk was skipped, and groups were merged onto an easier route, resulting in a total duration closer to 5 hours rather than the advertised 6–7. The “waterfall” is more of a small cascade, which may disappoint visitors expecting something more substantial based on the photos. The coffee visit was more explanatory than hands-on; we did not see coffee cherries or the differences between premium and lower-quality beans, as in other experiences. The cacao workshop felt quite basic for the time allocated. We also did not experience the advertised “Minca hammocks,” which some visitors may be looking forward to. On the positive side, the food was good, and parts of the guide’s storytelling were engaging. We suggest adding additional information to the description, especially the total walking distance, the elevation/difficulty of the eco-walk, and more accurate photographs of key highlights. A less insistent approach to product sales or tip innuendos would also improve the experience. Overall, the natural environment around Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta is impressive, but the value for money did not meet our expectations.

Operator response

Thank you for your honest review, we always thrive to offer a good experience for all our visitors and that is based in physical and weather conditions. In this case the we prioritized the physical conditions of our visitors in order for everyone to enjoy a beautiful day in Minca. Your transportation service was private (round way from your hotel) which it does have a difference compared to public bus transportation, also keep in mind Minca is located about 45min away from the Santa Marta urban area, not to mention our transportation service is optional and our visitors are more than welcome to explore other options that meet their needs to arrive at the meeting point. Also, we are not in harvest season for the coffee that´s why at this time of the year our coffee plants do not have the coffee cherry beans, and our cacao workshop is meant to be educative and interactive for our visitors. We appreciate your recommendations and will keep them in mind for the future. Please accept our most sincere apologies for the inconveniences and thank you for your understanding. Best regards from Minca.
