Mexico City Street Food: A Beginner’s Guide takes you into the heart of the Cuauhtémoc neighborhood, home to Mexico City’s stock exchange and its various foreign embassies. With so many hungry office workers—and dozens of outdoor stands to feed them—it’s a perfect place to explore the city’s vibrant street food scene. Besides eating, you’ll meet the vendors and learn their stories, and uncover rich facts about Mexican food and culture from your expert guide. Our stops can vary depending on the day, but some highlights on this tour include: Tlacoyos, Squash-Flower Burritos, Tacos de Carnitas and Cemitas. Plus several more items!

San Juan markets with Clara

What an absolutely amazing experience. We had the pleasure of touring with Clara who was absolutely wonderful. She took us all around the San Juan markets, as well as local street vendors. She had so many wonderful stories to tell, taught is tips and tricks for street foods and we had the best birria ans pastor weve ever had. I would give her 10 stars if I could.

Excellent for families, delicious food

Clara was our guide for a food tour with three adults and two 8-year-olds. She was phenomenal in selecting approachable yet interesting and new food options that appealed to everyone in the group. She was very kind and engaging with our kids. The food we tried was all delicious. I’ve been on other food tours that felt a bit like a gauntlet of information and food, but this tour had bite-sized portions of both. If you’re looking for a kid-friendly food tour that is also interesting for adults, look no further!

Operator response

Hello! Thank you for your kind comments. At some of the places we visit during the tour, we ask our vendors to portion out some of the food items so that each person receives a share. This allows us to visit more places and ensures everyone leaves having tried as much variety as possible. Even so, if anyone has a bigger appetite, we can always order more of what they enjoyed most. Thank you for trusting us to provide you and your family with this enjoyable and educational experience.

Tour Depends on Guide

I chose this tour for my husband and friends because the year before we had booked a night time taco tour that was amazing and it was from the same company. I guess not ever tour is the same for this company and it really depends on the guide you’re assigned. Unfortunately for us, our guide had a personal preferences for vegetarian & health conscious so our tour was mainly of vegetarian foods. To be honest, I don’t think she was a real foodie either because the places she took us to were okay at best. Not very flavorful - at times bland. I had found more delicious eateries in my own search. I would have been less annoyed and disappointed if I had intentionally & knowingly chose a tour that was listed as vegetarian forward - but I didn’t. So when 7 out of the 10 items we had were vegetarian (example number) I couldn’t help but think it was false advertisement and somewhat inconsiderate of the guide. I’m happy that that’s your lifestyle and it works for you, but as a paying customer don’t impose it onto me. Did I think the cost of the tickets were worth this particular tour with this particular guide? Absolutely not. It was kind of embarrassing too, as I had hyped the company up by raving about the night taco tour we had done with the in the past. I could clearly see the dissatisfaction on my friends faces with every vegetarian bite - we even joked saying we didn’t realize we booked a vegetarian/vegan tour.

Operator response

Hi Priscilla, we're so sorry the tour didn't meet your expectations. Fortunately, the first tour you took with us did. One of the things we try to showcase on our Street Food Tour is that many of the available items are originally vegetarian due to their pre-Hispanic origins, whose influence still permeates our country and shapes our cultural roots. We'll certainly talk to our guide so that on this tour, in addition to the classic items, she also offers more meat-based options for those who prefer them. All our guides have formal training in Mexican culinary arts. We appreciate your feedback and hope you continue exploring Mexican culture and food.
