The Former Kaichi School is a National Treasure and one of Matsumoto’s most important Meiji-era landmarks. Built in 1876, it is known for its distinctive giyōfū style, a unique blend of Western-looking design and traditional Japanese carpentry. The oldest preserved castle in Japan was extremely interesting to visit. The guide was very knowledgeable and gave us detailed information bringing the castle to life. There are a number of very steep staircases.
