This was an unexpected delight. My host Chirath took me to a small wood carving community. I saw a huge elephant being carved from a single piece of wood and other pieces finished in fine detail. I chose to paint a small elephant and the craftsman Deshan patiently showed me the different steps involved. I was the only Western guest that day so I was able to immerse myself in the silence and peace of the little outdoor workshop. It was a very genuine and authentic experience, and a wonderful last memory of Galle. Much gratitude to Chirath and Deshan.
