A Relaxed Way to See the Highlights of Marseille

My partner and I booked this excursion during our cruise stop in Marseille because we wanted something simple that covered the main sights without worrying about transport. The experience was well organized from the start, and everything ran on time. We especially enjoyed the panoramic views over the city and coastline. Marseille has a very different feel compared to other Mediterranean ports, and this tour gave us a good overview of its character. The guide shared helpful background information, but there was also enough space to take in the scenery at our own pace. Overall, it felt like a balanced day with a mix of guided commentary and free time, which worked well for a cruise stop.

The children enjoyed the scenic viewpoints

This excursion was a good fit for our family because it didn’t involve too much walking or complicated planning. Everything was clearly organized from the beginning. The children enjoyed the scenic viewpoints, and the adults appreciated learning a bit about Marseille’s history and culture. The guide was patient and made sure everyone stayed together. We also liked having some free time to move at our own pace. It made the experience more comfortable for a mixed-age group.

Perfect Vibe

The city has a cool, artsy feel with all the street art and little shops. We ate really well. In short it's not polished as some French cities but that's what we liked about it, it is more authentic rich in culture.

Easily the worst experience due to lies and bus conditions

I am not an uptight person. I am a go with the flow kind of guy. This tour was horrible we quit after the first stop. The pickup point was advertised as right at the terminal. It was in fact a 30 minute walk with zero direction other than two ladies who told us to follow the green line. After we left the cruise terminal on foot there was a bus parked in a vacant lot of a business building. Everyone was waiting outside the bus because the bus was actively blowing hot air. When we were instructed to get on the bus we sat in the very last row of the bus to having room. Every single seat was occupied. They then handed out listening devices and I assume due to being at the back of the bus they were unable to connect via Bluetooth. We echanged them and the new devices connected briefly. Then every 30.seconds or so they would disconnect. We found the source of the heat. Their was a heater blowing very hot air on my mothers legs, the air was so hot that if your leg touched the side of the bus it burnt you as it was heating the metal. When the gentleman sat down in front of me the back to his chair was broken and he was forced to lean back into my knees. The back of his seat was a burlap like material and I know have scabs from the abrasive material on our hour long sweaty miserable and silent drive. We got to our first location and told them of our issues and they just told me 3 times that our listening devices worked and there were no seats to move to. We decided to leave the tour as the thought of riding back an hour to Marseille was torture. They offered us no assistance so I paid 70 euros for a Uber back to Marseille. I then contacted trip advisor and requested a refund that they denied. I challenged that and they said they would talk with the tour operator and the tour operator JAT said we were told the pickup point and they are not responsible for the conditions of the bus. We were told they would pick us up at the terminal when in fact they picked us up outside of the terminal and a 30 minute walk away. By my math 50 people and 200 a person is 10,000 dollars. Get a bus that accommodates 50 people and has air conditioning and doesn't cause injury and frustration. Our tour with JAT the day before was better but no where near any other excursion experience from my past travels. Do not use these people they are horrible and unorganized and liars. End rant.

Operator response

We regret to hear about your disappointment. Please allow us to address the concerns raised. 1. That is correct: we pick up guests directly at the cruise terminal parking area, behind the secure zone. 2. Please note that the distance from remote docks assigned to your cruise ship is beyond our control, as docking arrangements are determined by the port authorities and cruise line. 3. We use modern, fully air-conditioned Mercedes-Benz coach buses, and we have not received any other reports from the group regarding seating or air-conditioning issues. 4. The headsets were in working order, and replacements were available from the guide upon request. 5. We do not provide taxi-calling assistance. Your decision to leave the tour was made independently and was beyond our control. 6. According to the guide, your disappointment appeared to stem from expecting a private tour. Please note that private tours are clearly labeled as “PRIVATE” directly in the tour title. Your refund request has been carefully reviewed and respectfully declined, in full accordance with TripAdvisor’s cancellation policy. When booking future activities, we strongly recommend basing your expectations on the tour description, itinerary, and listed inclusions rather than on personal assumptions. Safe travels.

Amazing tour

Amazing tour! Gabriella was a great guide. He is super knowledgeable and a great storyteller. The main square with the cethredral was closed, but he had prepared an alternative route. It was full of hidden gems and beautiful art. I really enjoyed it and would highly recommend this tour to all!

Perfect for Solo Travelers

I booked this walking tour alone on May 24, 2026, during a short trip to Florence. From the beginning, the guide Francesca made everyone feel comfortable and included. I appreciated how efficiently she navigated busy areas while still giving enough time for photos and questions. The historical explanations added a lot of value and helped me understand the city beyond the usual tourist attractions.

Informative Without Feeling Too Touristy

Went on this experience with three friends on May 19, 2026. Our guide Sofia was clearly passionate about the city and answered questions thoughtfully throughout the tour. The group size was manageable and we never felt packed together like some of the larger tours nearby. One stop felt slightly rushed because of timing, but overall the experience was very smooth and enjoyable.

Beware of instructions

Followed instructions and no Tour found. Messaged operator and no reply and called with no answer. They called and after telling us it was a white bus in poor english and talking to multiple couples they hung up. We missed tour and instead of any sympathy from viator we were fully charged. We will keep this policy in mind for future bookings and want people to know they may be paying and receiving just the 4000 steps looking for the tour.

Operator response

We regret to hear that you missed the tour. As for locating the pickup point, it is enough to read the Meeting and Pickup section of the tour description, which clearly states that the meeting point is at the parking area behind the security zone. The pickup instructions repeated this information and were sent to your email in advance. There are no Viator signs, since Viator uses hundreds of suppliers in such large ports, and each supplier greets guests with their own sign. In this case, the J.A.T. sign was clearly mentioned in the pickup information. You were the only couple missing among 413 of your fellow cruisers served that day in Marseille. Your refund request has been respectfully declined. When booking future activities through Viator, we strongly recommend reading and following the easy pickup information instead of looking for a Viator Mr. & Mrs. Smith sign. Safe travels.

Excellent Historical Insight

I joined this tour solo on April 27, 2026, and was impressed by how much local knowledge the guide provided. The tour moved at a comfortable pace and included several smaller streets and hidden corners I would never have found independently. It’s worth bringing a light hat because there’s limited shade during parts of the walk.

Excellent guide and smooth experience in Marseille

We joined this tour as a family in May 2026 and had a really enjoyable day overall. Our guide, Sofia, clearly knew the city extremely well and shared details we definitely would have missed on our own. The pace was comfortable even with children, and the smaller streets were honestly more interesting than the major tourist areas. It was warm during the afternoon, so definitely bring water and something for the sun.
