Maputo City Super Tour - More History and Tastes, & Less Walking

Description
Tours Maputo's Maputo City Tour maximizes the locations of interest, and minimizes unnecessary walking through busy streets. In just a few hours we show you what 3 or 4 walking tours will show you. You get to see the historical "Baixa" area of Maputo, and we also get to "Museu" bairro where some of the more famous more modern architecture can be found. You'll have the chance to taste fresh Mozambican coconut water as we also take in the new side of Maputo - Costa Do Sol. Costa do Sol is full of activity along the promenade and this beach side of the city. Having lunch on Katembe beach with the views over the river to Maputo City is another major attraction that few offer.

Itinerary
Maputo Fort is an interesting story in itself and it also houses a mini museum with more historical gems.
Often cited as "the 3rd most beautiful train station in the world", CFM train station is magnificent and beautiful. It's other claim to fame is having featured in Leonardo Dicaprio's "Blood Diamond".
This magnificent statue of Mozambique's beloved freedom fighter and first President stands in the center of Maputo's Independence square with a number of architectural giants surrounding the square, including the Maputo Cathedral, and Municipal Building.
Famous because many believe it was designed by Gustav Eiffel. It was actually designed by the Belguim Joseph Danly using the "Danly System" - one of the oldest prefab construction methods. We appreciate this interesting project from outside - inside is a functioning office open Monday to Friday and closed Saturdays and Sundays.
FEIMA is a thriving artisan market with a wide range of Mozambique classic souvenirs.
On the outside Vila Algarve's façade is probably the most beautiful tiling in Mozambique - inside however has a much darker history - one of the favorite stops on this fascinating tour.
This unique church is as fascinating inside as it is inside. Often referred to as the "Lemon Squeezer".
No tour of Maputo would be complete with going across the Maputo-Katembe bridge. We take advantage of the laid back style on the Katembe side of the river where you will stop for lunch with the chance to eat some of the best seafood in Africa
A chance to eat the famous Mozambican fresh seafood at this lunch stop. Lunch is not included. This stop is great for taking photos of Maputo across the river. Clients can choose to lunch here IF THEY WISH.
Maputo has a number of sides, most of the walking tours are restricted to one small area of the old city. Our tour shows the burgeoning Costa do Sol where the beach is being embraced and skyscrapers are multiplying. On Saturdays there are always bridal parties using this picturesque location for memorable photos.

This is a great introductory tour to get a sense of the highlights of Maputo. We had explanations and time to explore courtesy of our fantastic guide Hermínio and driver Charles. Stops were well organized and timed to provide us with answers to all our questions. Lunch location was scenic (right on the beach). Food was good though limited options for vegetarians. Highly recommend!
I couldn't have asked for anymore from this tour with Egas! One of the most knowledgeable and interesting guides I've had the pleasure I've had the privilege of spending time with wandering his country and hearing all about history. But we also spent a LOT of time together laughing and just conversing Life. He didn't mind and never tired of my incessant questions about buildings and the reasons for the current status quo of places in Maputo & Mozambique. Even when the Tour was done, he was my go-to person for my remaining time in Maputo, advising me on restaurants, Tuk Tuks (Wambaco was great!), places to visit and other taxi services when TukTuks ran out of (human) steam. I especially loved our coffee moments at the Railway station and the Market. Thank you so much for sharing your world and allowing me a moment of understanding and sheer joy 😊
Thank-you, this is such a beautiful review and we've printed and shared it with Egas to ensure how much his knowledge and guidance is appreciated!
Excellent tour. We stopped at all the important places. Egas, our guide did a great job. The Natural History Museum was slightly small but very well done. We felt that the markets were not good, with the same things over and over. We returned to the cruise ship in plenty of time.
Thank-you for your review, it is appreciated and valuable for other travellers. We have been catering for Cruise Ship clients for many years now and I think we understand how to get the best out of your short time in Maputo!
The tour was well planned, we saw a lot of Maputo in the short term. The guide explained everything well.
A great tour with a great guide as well as a prudent driver. We saw a lot and got an extensive impression of Maputo. Thank you again.
We did a day tour with Egas, and it was excellent. He was knowledgeable about the city’s history and culture, took us to great sites, and gave fantastic lunch and dinner recommendations. We managed to experience so much in one day, including local arts and crafts. Highly recommend Egas for an insightful and well-organized tour.
We were greeted promptly by Alfar who gave us a comprehensive tour of both the tourist must - do as well as places for the everyday citizen. Thank you Alfar for a great tour and gave us a much better understanding and appreciation of your city.
It was an excellent day tour . Really interesting city to see is Maputo. I was lucky to have this tour on Saturday as it is a holiday for the locals. Anyway the guide and the driver were excellent. Don’t miss this day tour if ever in Maputo.
The program would actually be good and the guide was helpful, the driver professional us sejr good vehicle, but.... Iron House closed National Museum closed Town Hall closed And because it was Sunday.... Churches occupied and market more than half empty The food in Katembe that I had to take alone was sejr good, though more expensive than usual
Hi Marcel, Thank-you for you review and we will learn from this and make it more clear on the platform that on Sundays the Municipal Building and Iron House are closed. Egas, your guide, and Alfainho, your driver, are very sad that they have received their first ever poor review. They work extra hard to make sure all of our clients are left satisfied with our tours. Yes, the Town hall & Iron House are closed on Sundays (And Saturdays), they only open Monday to Friday as they are functioning offices. Many of our clients have loved seeing the Maputo Cathedral full of Mozambican Catholics, we're sorry that this was an inconvenience in your case. I think you refer to the Maputo Museum? It's actually been closed for renovation for 6 months now. We still pass by there for it's famous gothic architecture. Regarding the lunch stop in Katembe, we usually go to O Farol for lunch if there is space. It's one of the most popular places in Maputo and is often full not only because of the quality of food, but also because of its fair prices. Egas told me that he made it very clear our stop for lunch there is optional. Most of our clients enjoy crossing the famous Maputo-Katembe Bridge and seeing Maputo from the other side of the river. We only stop for lunch if the client wishes. Despite the Iron House and Municipal Building being closed all of the other 12 stops on the tour were open as normal (We don't actually normally enter the Iron House in our tours) Once again, thank-you for the important feedback, we will change the description to make sure travellers are aware that these two stops can only be seen from outside on Saturdays and Sundays.
Tour was okay, but we were somewhat unhappy with how it ended. Tour included a lunch stop, which we were not interested in. Unfortunately, we were not given the option to skip. While others were eating, we agreed to wait until a specified time. The agreed to time was not followed. A better attempt could have been made to accommodate.
We have been doing these Maputo City Super Tours with cruise ship passengers for a few years now and on average about 50% of the cruise ship passengers prefer to cross over to Katembe to see the views and beach from that side, and then get dropped off back at the Port and we go back to get the remaining clients who are lunching. Even the evening before this tour we reminded the team to make sure it was made clear that we are happy to do this. I'm not sure where the breakdown in communication was but we are sorry that you were kept waiting. It's our policy to always bring back the clients who do not wish to stay around for lunch. I'm sorry this happened to you. We will use it as a learning experience to make sure we are clearer to clients that this is an option.
