Itinerary

10 min

We begin the tour Essence of Lisbon in the historic heart of the city, where 18th-century charm meets centuries of transformation. In Praça D. Pedro IV, also known as Rossio, the wave-patterned cobblestones reflect Lisbon’s artistic flair, while the surrounding neoclassical buildings hint at its rebirth after the devastating 1755 earthquake.

15 min

As we make our way through narrow alleys and mosaic-tiled streets, we rise toward one of the city’s most photogenic viewpoints. From Portas do Sol, Lisbon opens like a painting: whitewashed façades, terracotta rooftops, and the glistening Tagus River blend into a breathtaking panorama.

30 min

Descending into the oldest part of Lisbon, Alfama, we walk through cobbled lanes that whisper stories of resilience, fado, and multicultural layers. Here, every turn reveals the coexistence of Christian, Jewish, and Moorish heritage.

10 min

You’ll pass by Chafariz d’El Rei, a centuries-old fountain that once served as a meeting point for travelers and locals alike, and learn how Lisbon’s communities lived side by side through turbulent and prosperous eras alike.

Pass by

At the iconic Casa dos Bicos, you’ll pause to admire the unique diamond-point façade, a true Renaissance marvel. Today, it houses the José Saramago Foundation, dedicated to Portugal’s Nobel Prize-winning author, adding a literary and symbolic dimension to this historic structure.

15 min

A short walk brings us to Lisbon’s oldest cathedral, the Sé, a fortress-like church that has stood since the 12th century.

10 min

We stop at the Church of Santo António, built on the birthplace of Lisbon’s beloved patron saint, revered by locals and visitors from around the world.

15 min

Terreiro do Paço, also known as Praça do Comércio, the grand riverside square that once marked the gateway to the Portuguese Empire. From royal processions to revolutionary uprisings, this site has witnessed pivotal moments that shaped the course of Portugal’s identity.

15 min

As we head back into the city Historic Centre, the elegant Rua Augusta offers a moment to soak in Lisbon’s 19th-century flair, with its triumphal arch, lively cafés, and street performers. Nearby, you’ll admire the Elevador de Santa Justa, a wrought-iron lift that elegantly connects the downtown Baixa with the higher Bairro Alto district—an engineering gem with Parisian flair.

15 min

Immerse yourself in Chiado, the cultural heart of the city, filled with theaters, bookstores, and historic cafes. This mix of neighborhoods showcases the dynamic spirit of Lisbon, where tradition meets contemporary flair.

15 min

Winding into the romantic Largo do Carmo, your guide shares the story of the Carmo Convent, its gothic arches left open to the sky after the earthquake. It’s a hauntingly beautiful reminder of Lisbon’s impermanence and strength.

15 min

Stepping into the richly decorated Church of São Roque, we encounter an unexpected explosion of baroque splendor, home to one of the most ornate chapels ever built in Rome and gifted to Portugal. The interior glows with gold, lapis lazuli, and centuries of religious significance.

15 min

We conclude at Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara, where the city stretches beneath us in a sweeping view that captures both the grandeur and intimacy of Lisbon. From the castle to the river, from history to today’s bustle, it’s the perfect place to reflect and say goodbye to the stories that have accompanied you.

Great way to see Old Town Lisbon

We saw all seven hills and climbed each one along the way. Our guide was awesome, had so much knowledge to share, but didn't go overboard. He knew his way around and found us elevators to save us walking up all the hills. Was a fully packed tour and saw way more than we thought we would see. I would highly recommend this tour for a great background on Lisbon and how to get around the old town.
