Itinerary

10 min

Porta Rudiae is one of the historic gates of the city of Lecce that allowed access to the city by crossing its defensive walls. The current structure, built in 1703, is a baroque reconstruction realized thanks to Prospero Lubelli.

15 min

In the past, the square was known as the “Courtyard of the Bishop’s Palace,” an area reserved exclusively for the clergy and surrounded by religious buildings that isolated it from the rest of the city.

Admission not included40 min

The Cathedral of Lecce, also called the Cathedral of Santa Maria dell’Assunta e Sant’Oronzo, is the center of the city’s religious life. The cathedral was rebuilt in 1659 on the ruins of a previous church, which had been demolished because it was no longer adequate to accommodate the growing population of believers.

Pass by

The Bell Tower of the Cathedral of Lecce is over 70 meters high and is adorned with balustrades, flower vases, pyramids and other elaborate decorations. Amazing view from the top!

15 min

The Roman Theatre, one of the most significant testimonies of the ancient imperial city of Lupiae. Built during the first decades of the 1st century AD by order of the emperor Octavian Augustus, the theatre, together with the amphitheatre which I will tell you about later, represented an important entertainment centre for this city of the Roman Empire.

Pass by

It was the emperor Octavian Augustus, in the first decades of the 1st century AD, who wanted the construction of this great Amphitheater. Studies suggest a capacity of about 20,000 spectators.

15 min

Piazza Sant’Oronzo represents the true vital center of the city of Lecce, not only from an artistic point of view, but also symbolic and social. Piazza Sant’Oronzo is located in the heart of what was once the Roman Lupiae.

Pass by

The Basilica of Santa Croce is considered the symbol of Lecce Baroque. Its construction began in 1549, on the initiative of the Celestine Fathers, a religious order, after the demolition of the previous temple and convent founded in the second half of the 14th century in the area of the Carlo V Castle.

Pass by

The Charles V Castle is the largest castle in Puglia. Built in the 12th century AD, it was named after the Spanish king Charles V because, in 1539, the emperor ordered the reconstruction of the previous castle, considered unsuitable to defend the city from Turkish incursions in the Mediterranean.

Perfect for us!

This was a perfect way for us to see Lecce on our own terms! The guide allowed us to set our own timetable and not be part of a group. Would definitely use again for other destinations.

We would highly recommend!

It’s an easy download and guide to follow and navigate. Very interesting history and information on Lecce. We did a self guided tour and enjoyed lunch & some shopping along the way!

A good conversational guide

An economical and useful way to approach a first visit to a city that one does not know, directed towards unmissable places and monuments. Lecce is a remarkable city made bright by the number of buildings constructed from Lecce stone. The guide is very clear in the essentials of the commentary, which can be deepened on the sites normally used by tourists (wiki or city sites or those of individual monuments).

Great!

A great option to learn and have a plan but still be able to do your own thing/deviate/go at your own pace. I did this tour in Bari and Lecce and loved it both times. A great option for the price and if you have limited time or don't want to deal with a guided tour.

Recommend!

I used these tours in Bari and Lecce and they were such a great way to see this city with a little extra guidance and information, without having to join a full guided tour or do the research yourself. The information is basic, but thorough for each stop and it is so easy to follow with map links to every site. It's the perfect way to learn and have a goal instead of just walking around but still have freedom to do your own thing.

App not good. The Jewish museum and Faggiano not even mentioned!

App not good. Every time I took a photo , I had to restart, put in password again. The Jewish museum and Faggiano were not even mentioned .

Operator response

Ciao, actually, access remains active in the browser for 3 days, so it seems strange you're having these problems! We're always ready and responsive to respond via WhatsApp, and we're sorry you didn't message us: we would have helped you right away 😌! The Jewish Museum is mentioned in the extras to visit, while Faggiano is about 100km away: perhaps a bit too far for a walking tour 😌! I hope this answer can help other travelers! Ciao Walking Cap

A good introduction

I used this to give a basic structure to a day trip to Lecce. The technology worked fine, and the commentary provided useful information. Inevitably, there are limitations: for example, the tour started at the Porta Rudiae which is being restored and was not visible on the day I visited; and no such tour can be comprehensive, so I enjoyed visiting the Chiesa San Matteo which did not feature on the walking tour. But the tour does what it does (and what I bought it for) effectively. The flexibility to go at one’s one pace is a big plus.

Useful tool for visiting Lecce.

The walk will take you past all the main sights. You will receive a detailed explanation. You can choose how extensively you want to listen to/read the explanation. You will also receive information about opening hours and ticket prices. Thanks to the link to Google Maps, you can easily find your way around.
