The shimmering waters of Lake Titicaca, the world’s highest navigable lake is one the unmissable attractions in Peru. It straddles the border between Peru and Bolivia. The “Puma Shaped Lake” is Spread in over 8372 Km, the lake is home to some traditional local communities who are untouched by modernity. On this half day tour from Puno, you will be visiting the most photographed and the prominent man made Floating Islands of Uros that is made entirely of tatora reeds. Totora reeds were first used centuries ago to build these islands on Lake Titicaca by the Uro-Aymara families who made their home on the lake. The local people’s boats are also made from totora reeds, and they use these vessels for fishing. Even some of the islanders’ handcrafts are made from totora reeds, and the friendly people of this community offer their work to visitors as a souvenir of their visit to this magical place.

Itinerary
Your epic Uros Floating Island Tour begins with a transfer to the boat pier where you will embark on a 25 minutes boat ride to see the life on the floating islands of Uros. As you begin sailing away, you will get a pristine view of the snow capped Andean peaks at a distance. As we will reach to the shores of Uros islands, locals will extend a warm welcome and will introduce you to their life on this man made island. People here speak Aymara, our tour guide will teach you a few words so you can greet them in their language. The head of the community will demonstrate on how they build these islands and will share the history of it. If desired, you can buy some souvenirs here. The locals will then offer a short ride on their totora reed boat to the main island of Uros (this has an additional cost). You will have some free time to stroll around, the island is also made of totora reed. Once you have had your fill of the history and views, we will embark on a journey back to Puno.

It was a half day tour and it was well organized by the provider. I visited Uros islands, learned about culture and how they make floating islands using Totora reef and then we had a small additional ride (optional) at an additional cost of 20 soles on traditional puma reed boat and it was so beautiful. Local Aymara people does rely on tourism, textiles and boat tours for their livelihood.

An absolutely gorgeous natural gem in South America, Lake Titicaca offers a truly unique experience, especially with a visit to the Uros Islands. Sitting at an altitude of around 3,800 meters above sea level, the lake is vast and breathtaking. While the islands are now well developed for tourism, they remain fascinating and culturally enriching. The experience is deeply educational, offering insights into the traditions and lifestyle of the local people. The food is a highlight especially the ceviche and the local Puteada tea is highly recommended. Prices for food and drinks are quite reasonable, making the visit even more enjoyable. It’s a wonderful destination and definitely not to be missed.

It was a wonderful island experience, and I’m glad I had the opportunity to visit. Amazing tour to the floating islands with Abel! Everything was perfect, pickup was ontime and Abel the guide was friendly and informative. Yes, it was a bit touristy but guess this is the prime source of income for the island dwellers. The tour company was exceptionally nice, all entrance fees and transportation were arranged and i was contacted the night before with detailed pockup information.
