Itinerary
The cliffs of the Ponta da Piedade headland is one of the finest natural features of the Algarve. This dramatic limestone coastline is formed of sea pillars, fragile rock arches and hidden grottos, all of which have been chiselled-out by savage winter storms.
Being the most south-westerly point in mainland Europe, this rugged and forbidding Cape has long been considered sacred ground – ancient Greeks called it the ‘Land of Serpents’, but the pugnacious Romans oddly preferred a meeker designation: Promontorium Sacrum (‘Holy Promontory’), the Latin origin of the name ‘Sagres’ (from Sacrum). For them, terra firma-loving citizens of Rome, Cape St. Vincent was the ‘Edge of the World’, a supernatural vortex where the setting sun was dramatically submerged by the immense, unknown ocean (still today, the fading solar disk occasionally seems bigger and brighter at Cape St. Vincent). The myth persisted throughout the Middle Ages until a man decided to end all that crazy nonsense and – in the process – put an end to the Age of Darkness: Prince Henry the Navigator
In terms of global importance, Sagres' heyday was in the 15th century and this was down to Prince Henry the Navigator. He chose Sagres as his home and location of his school of navigation. The school boasts alumni such as Fernao de Magalhaes (Magellan), Pedro Alvares Cabral and Vasco da Gama whose impact on the World is still felt today. It was from nearby Belixe that the first caravels were launched, the same ships that brought about Portugal's age of The Discoveries and helped define the nation's identity.
Lagos is a historic and characterful city that is situated on the beautiful Western Algarve. It is a city that boasts a rich seafaring heritage and a coastline of dramatic natural scenery, and today is one of the Algarve’s finest holiday destinations. Thankfully, Lagos has not succumbed to mass tourism, and the city still retains its distinctive character and charm. Found within the historic centre is a proud Portuguese city, with cobbled streets, authentic restaurants, and an atmosphere which is relaxed and welcoming.

Great trip, great guide. Very knowledgeable, great personality, very flexible with great recommendations on how to make the trip great for *us*
Thank you so much for your kind review. You were great too :)
Gabriel was an excellent guide. Took us to spots that were off the beaten path. Very knowledgeable and English speaking. Van was roomy and was an overall great day.
Thank much for the kind review Michael! :)
I highly recommend this tour for anyone wanting to see more than just Lagos & Sagres. The tour started out with Gabriel picking us up at our hotel exactly on time. He had a comfortable van for our day's adventure. Our first stop was Ponta da Piedade where we had plenty of time to walk the footpaths above the cliff tops and take the stairs leading to a very picturesque cove. We next drove to Cape St. Vincent (the end of the world) and enjoyed a beautiful time walking along the cliffs and the lighthouse grounds.Gabriel then drove us to Sagres for lunch in a small local restaurant where we selected our fish to be cooked over an outdoor charcoal grill while waiting with a cold beer. After lunch we toured around Sagres on our way to Lagos. Gabriel parked in a spot that took us through the walls of the city and through the old town. It was a very beautiful city to see. On the way back to Albufiera, we had a few other stops that Gabriel recommended to enjoy the scenario. Although this tour was seven hours, it went by very quickly as Gabriel is able to converse on any subject. If you're looking to get out of Faro or Albufiera for the day, this is the tour and company for you.
Wow! What a great review! Thank you very much! Look forward for the next one :) Gabriel
