Itinerary
La Leona Waterfall is located in the small town of Curubandé, 20 minutes from Liberia in the province of Guanacaste. La Leona is a unique deep blue waterfall rooted between two canyons. It’s one of the few, if not the only, one in Costa Rica with this characteristic. Its water comes from the “white river” or “Rio Blanco” that finds its source in the skirts of the Volcano Rincon de la Vieja. The color of the water is just amazing, between blue and turquoise, which is explained by the presence of sulfur. It’s definitely a must in this area! Hairo was an amazing guide. He was so patient with our 78 year old Grandma and helped her every step of the way. The journey to the waterfall was fine for ages 11-43. Holding on to the ropes and forging the river was fun and something I’ve never done before. The six year old and 78 year old had a harder time with climbing up and down the steep terrain. Hairo was super patient with both of them and helped them both. We really appreciate him taking the time to tell us facts about the plants and show us local wildlife. He was a wonderful guide!
This was one of our favorite excursions during our nine days visiting Costa Rica. The hike is not easy but not too difficult, our instructor, Kevin, was fabulous-so funny and patient. He pointed out many cool things such as howler monkeys and bats! Our kids loved jumping off the boulders into the refreshing river. The waterfall itself was spectacular! We loved our experience!
We had an amazing experience at La Leona Waterfall! Our guides, Diego and Jon, were outstanding—friendly, knowledgeable, and made the entire adventure safe, fun, and unforgettable. Their enthusiasm and professionalism truly made the experience even better. The tour was an incredible value for the price, and we had an absolute blast from start to finish. We would highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting the area. We’ll definitely be doing it again!
Great hike and waterfall experience! The hike is not too difficult, but makes you work just enough to make you really enjoy La Leona. Wilburt (Will), our guide, was fantastic. Highly recommend.
What a great experience Hiking the trails back to La Leona waterfall! Check in process was super easy, then you jump in the back of a truck to the trail head. Our tour guide Dylan was so friendly and knowledgeable and encouraged us to do all the fun rock jumps and slides along the way. We hiked through caves with bats and you actually make it to two waterfalls. The are is beautiful. The only thing you really we really needed was water, waterproof phone case and GOOD gripping water shoes. We did bug spray ahead of time but didn’t really need it. Our kids have done many hikes in Hawaii and this was by far their favorite because of how many different scenes you go through.
We had an amazing experience on this tour. The company was top notch organized and responsive to questions. The website completely prepared us . Once there we felt safe and taken care of and we learned alot about the environment from our wonderful guide Pablo. So fun and beautiful . Highly recommended.
We were a group of seven ranging in age from teenagers to grandparents in their 70s, and our guide, Brandon, was absolutely phenomenal. He is by far one of the best tour guides we've ever had. From the moment we started, he was friendly, engaging, knowledgeable, and genuinely invested in making sure everyone had an amazing experience. Throughout the hike, Brandon pointed out and explained the plants, animals, and unique features native to the area, making the adventure both fun and educational. His passion for the environment and local wildlife was contagious, and we learned so much along the way. The hike itself was an adventure! The mile-and-a-half trek took us through streams, over rocks, and through beautiful scenery. Brandon made sure everyone felt comfortable and safe, regardless of age or hiking experience. Along the way, we stopped to swim, enjoyed fresh mangoes, and even got to go down a natural rock slide, which was a huge hit with our group. What stood out most was Brandon's ability to make every member of our group feel included and cared for. Whether helping someone navigate a rocky section or sharing stories about the area, he went above and beyond to create an incredible experience. La Leona Waterfall is breathtaking, and the journey to get there was just as memorable. If you're considering this tour, I highly recommend it—and if you have the chance to go with Brandon, you're in for an exceptional experience!
We loved our experience at La Leona! Our guide Holman was incredibly knowledgeable and easy to get along with. He thoughtfully pointed out interesting plants and animals along the way. He also let us set the pace and choose whether to take more challenging routes throughout the hike. The facilities were easy to find and get checked in, and we enjoyed lunch next door after finishing the hike.
This experience was amazing! Right from the start our guides, Ronny, Dillon and Josue were not only engaging but entertaining, so helpful and loads of fun!!! This will definitely 💯 be one of our most memorable trips!!!
La Leona Waterfall Adventure Hike was an absolutely exceptional experience from start to finish. The entire tour was extremely well organized, making everything smooth, efficient, and stress-free from the moment we arrived. Our guide, Victor, was outstanding — incredibly knowledgeable, professional, and genuinely passionate about the area. What truly stood out was his strong emphasis on safety throughout the entire hike. Victor carefully guided us step by step, clearly explaining exactly where to place our feet, pointing out rocks beneath the water during river crossings, and helping us navigate the swimming sections with confidence. His attention to detail made us feel safe and comfortable at all times while still allowing us to fully enjoy the adventure. Beyond being an expert guide, Victor also went above and beyond by taking amazing photos and videos for us along the way, which made the experience even more memorable. This was an unforgettable adventure and one of the highlights of our trip. If you’re considering the La Leona Waterfall hike, I highly recommend this tour company — and if you can, ask for Victor! He made the experience truly outstanding.
