Itinerary

Mount Rokko (六甲山, Rokkōsan, 931 meters) is the highest peak in the Rokko mountain range, which provides the pleasant green backdrop to the city of Kobe. Panoramic views of the heavily urbanized Hanshin region (Kobe and Osaka) can be enjoyed from the mountain and are particularly spectacular around sunset.

Admission not included5 min

Shin-Kobe Ropeway (新神戸ロープウェー) is one of three services that lifts tourists up the southern slopes of the Rokko mountain chain. The ropeway departs from next to Shin-Kobe Station, Kobe's shinkansen station. As it ascends, it passes by the Nunobiki Waterfall and the Nunobiki Herb Garden, giving a nice aerial view of both. The highlight of the ride lies in the observation deck located just beside the top station, which offers spectacular views of Kobe and is a popular night view spot.

On January 17, 1995 at 5:46 am, the city of Kobe was hit by the Great Hanshin Awaji Earthquake, resulting in the death of more than 5000 people and the destruction of tens of thousands of homes. The Earthquake Memorial Museum, part of the Disaster Reduction and Human Renovation Institution (人と防災未来センター, Hito to Bōsai Mirai Center), was opened in 2002 to commemorate the tragic event and to educate visitors about earthquakes and disaster prevention. The museum includes a large screen theater with realistic images of the earthquake's destructiveness, a documentary film about the recovery process, lots of information about the earthquake and various interactive games about disaster prevention.

Kitano-cho (北野町, Kitanochō) is a city district at the foot of the Rokko mountain range where many foreign merchants and diplomats settled after the Port of Kobe was opened to foreign trade in the second half of the 19th century. More than a dozen of the former mansions, known as Ijinkan, remain in the area and are open to the public as museums. Most of the houses charge an admission fee between 550 to 750 yen, while combination tickets are available to see multiple houses. The entire district is pleasant to walk through and offers a variety of cafes, restaurants and boutiques, making it a favorite among young Japanese couples.

Kobe Harborland (神戸ハーバーランド) is a shopping and entertainment district between JR Kobe Station and the waterfront of Kobe's port area. The district offers a large selection of shops, restaurants, cafes and other amusements, which, together with the romantic evening atmosphere, have made it a popular spot for couples and tourists alike. The most prominent shopping complex in Kobe Harborland is Umie which consists of three parts: Mosaic, South Mall and North Mall. Mosaic stretches along the waterfront and offers a wide selection of restaurants. Many of the eateries overlook the harbor with views of Kobe Port Tower and the Kobe Maritime Museum across the water, which are especially nice in the evenings when they are illuminated. At the southern end of Mosaic stand a Ferris wheel and the Anpanman Museum, a museum dedicated to the popular manga and anime series about the bread-headed superhero. The South Mall and North Mall are enclosed shopping malls featuring a department store and more various smaller shops.

Admission not included5 min

Kobe's Nada (灘) district is Japan's top sake producing region. It has long been famous for its sake due to the availability of high quality rice, suitable water and favorable weather conditions in the area. Its proximity to Kobe Port and Osaka has also facilitated physical distribution since olden times. Many sake breweries operate in the Nada district, which stretches approximately three kilometers east to west. Some open stores and/or exhibition rooms to the public and allow guests to taste their sake. A couple of them also maintain a museum introducing the process of sake brewing.

Sawanotsuru Sake Museum was opened in 1978 with the aim of commemorating the sake-brewing heritage of the Nada district. It was destroyed by the Great Hanshin Earthquake in 1995 and was subsequently rebuilt in 1999. Visitors can learn about traditional brewing methods and the ingredients involved. English pamphlets are available.

Nankinmachi (南京町) is a compact Chinatown in central Kobe and a center of the Chinese community in the Kansai Region. The area was developed by Chinese merchants who settled near Kobe Port after the port was opened to foreign trade in 1868. As the Chinatown developed, it became known as Nankinmachi after Nanjing, the former Chinese capital. Nankinmachi is a popular tourist attraction and shopping and dining district. Two main streets run through the district, meeting each other at a small plaza in the center. They are packed with shops, restaurants and food stands that sell popular items such as steamed buns (manju), ramen, tapioca drinks and various other Chinese dishes, many of which have been Japanized to a certain degree.

Admission not included10 min

Sakuramasamune has a small exhibition space which showcases some tools and simple machines used in the past for sake production. There is also a video presentation showing clips of its traditional brewing process. Sake tasting is available at a shop selling its sake brews. There is limited English information at this location.

Hamafukutsuru has won several awards for its high-grade "ginjo" sake. The exhibition space on the second level of the building explains to guests their sake brewing process through diagrams and written information (English available). Visitors are also able to peer through windows to look at brewing machines as they are being used.

Admission not included10 min

Kikumasamune Sake Museum is housed in a nice wooden-plaster building. Wooden tools, containers and machinery are exhibited in a room accompanied by atmospheric lighting and traditional music. Well-written pamphlets are available in nine languages.

Shushinkan has a large shop selling sake and sake-related products, as well as a restaurant serving Japanese cuisine in combination with sake. Free guided tours of the sake warehouse are held once per day except in December. Sake tasting is available as well.

The Akashi Kaikyo Bridge is, with a length of almost four kilometers, the world's longest suspension bridge. Opened in 1998, it spans the Akashi Strait (Akashi Kaikyo) between Kobe and Awaji Island and is part of the Kobe-Awaji-Naruto Expressway, one of three expressways which connect Honshu with Shikoku. The Bridge Exhibition Center at the foot of the Kobe side of the bridge provides well-presented information about the planning and construction of the bridge and about other suspension bridges around the world, although the detailed explanations are available in Japanese only.

Absolutely amazing tour and guide

This was the perfect Kyoto tour for our family (two older kids). LJ was the absolute best guide. He explained things along the way and made sure we could have memorable photos to go along with our trip. Our kids haven’t stopped raving about him and the tour which never happens! This is a must do for Kyoto

Kobe Variety.

Our delightful guide, Norio, was knowledgeable and a master at train negotiation! A highlight of the tour was the Herb Garden and Ropeway visit. The Sake Brewery and Museum was interesting with fabulous explanation from Norio combined with outstanding exhibits and tastings! He then left us to wander at our leisure in Chinatown.

Operator response

Thank you so much for your kind review. Yes, we visited Kobe Nunobiki Herb Garden, Hakutsuru Sake Brewery Museum, and finished the tour at ChinaTown. In the Herb Garden, the roses were so pretty and beautiful, and the views of Kobe from there were breathtaking. And, we enjoyed learning the complicated process of Sake making. Thanks again, I had a wonderful time with you three. From your guide, Norio

A fantastic time!

We were met by Harumi Sagayama, our guide, at the Shinkansen station. We immediately bonded over a shared love of Sumo, in particular as her favourite and ours are brothers! She went over the itinerary and adjusted the order of things to suit our preferences. Harumi was very knowledgeable, showing us the best order in which to view the Herb Gardens .. an hour seemed like a long time but we could have stayed there longer! We went on to view the earthquake memorial, go shopping, check out several museums and had a great tour of Kobe, with extensive explanations of the history of the city. We had many options for lunch but decided on an authentic Japanese experience .. the menu was hand-written in Japanese only and the food was delicious, although we would have been utterly lost without Harumi translating for us! When we went to pay for lunch we discovered a disaster-my wife had lost her wallet! Harumi was extremely helpful, taking us back to the last place she had used the wallet. The shop had no idea but Harumi took us to the security office and thankfully the lost was found! Given that the wallet had all of her ID, credit cards etc if we hadn't found it we would have been in considerable trouble but Harumi stayed with us past the official end-time of the tour to ensure that we retrieved the wallet and that we were all set for our return trip. She turned what would have been disaster around, and we are profoundly grateful! Not only a skilled and wise guide but a friendly, helpful and resourceful person! We would highly recommend her for anyone interested in learning about Kobe.

Operator response

Thank you for your kind comments. We had a very enjoyable tour. I was also relieved that your wallet was returned. I believe this is due to your good character. Please come to Japan again. I would love to enjoy sumo wrestling with you. - Harumi

Relaxed tour

We arrived in Kobe on a cruise ship April 2026 Our guide Mr Yama had helped us plan a tour for the two of us prior to our arrival in Japan giving us several options. We had a most enjoyable and informative tour of the venues we had agreed on with him previously. He was waiting for us at the cruise port terminal as agreed and we first went to the Herb Garden via a cable car ride up the steep mountain side. The ride gave us a great view of Kobe and as it was fine we could even see Osaka. Our next stop was the European section of town which we walked down to from the Herb Garden . We enjoyed a coffee and cake at Starbucks to conclude our trip. Mr.Yama passed on to us his extensive knowledge of the history of sites visited and Kobe in general during the tour He also took photos of us during the tour to create memories for the future for us. His translation of written Japanese language inscriptions when required was appreciated. He was patient allowing us to set our own pace throughout the tour.

We enjoyed our time with Chiyuki as she toured us throughout Kobe. Showed as how to maneuver the trains and buses. She toured us through the beautiful Herb Gardens with a wonderful view of the city. Custom Kobe Tour

We booked this tour for the two of us and had a very interesting and enjoyable tour. Aki, our professional guide, sent us several options for our tour ahead of time and we selected the one that appealed to us. We went to the Herb Garden via a 10 minute gondola ride up the steep mountain side. The ride gave us a great view of Kobe and with the clear weather, we could even see Osaka. The Gardens were a mix of European style and Japanese but were as immaculate as a garden area could be, very well landscaped and maintained. We wander down the mountain with different herb gardens along just off the wide boulevards. Very impressive, even if you don't have a great interest in gardens and herbs. Our next stop was to the European section of town to walk through and see the older buildings that had survived the war. Other than the roof tiles, they were very familiar to us as they looked a lot like home. Still, very interesting to see the blend of styles. Walking through the neighbour led us to the Chinatown section, one of the three largest in Japan. We happened to be walking through the main street around lunch time and were stopped by some high school girls. Aki explained that they were on a scavenger hunt and had to bring back a photo with a foreign person and they wanted to know if they could get a picture with us. Unusual, to say the least, but we obliged and Aki took the photo for them. I hope they got a top score! Finally, she took us to the main shopping street nearby where the street was roofed over in frosted glass. Lots of different shops including a 100 Yen store/dollar store which was fun to poke around in. She took us to the spot where the free shuttle to the port terminal did the pickups which happened to be next to the Daimaru department store. She suggested going down to the basement floor to see the food that the locals routinely buy. We did and were surprised to see that it was much more than a grocery store. There were many sections with sweets and chocolates for sale as well as take way meals. The decor by itself was impressive, and the displays of chocolates etc were almost works of art. Yes, we bought some as gifts, they were too pretty not to. Final point to discuss was getting around. We used the local public transport, purchasing tickets with Aki's help. It is important to know that the only digital payment available seems to be prepaid metro cards, so cash is required. Aki let us know ahead of time what we would need to budget and it was more than enough. Admission to the Herb Garden was payable by credit card as well as purchases at the department store, but the shops in Chinatown and the shopping street were cash only. We had a very enjoyable tour and a great guide, Aki made sure we had brought what we needed for cash to get around and gave us a private tailored tour that we loved. Highly recommend this tour and especially Aki who made it a bespoke day out.
