Knife (Khukuri) Making Workshop- Forge of the Gurkhas

Description
The khukuri is the symbol of loyalty and Gurkha warrior, regarded as traditional to all hill tribes of Nepal, also a multipurpose knife can be used for shaping timber to chopping up meat and vegetables. The blade is of tempered steel, slightly curved and exceedingly sharp. The handle is usually of wood or buffalo horn. A nick in the blade close to the handle serves the purpose of preventing blood from reaching the handle and is also symbolic of the Hindu Trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. The blade is enclosed in a scabbard of wood and leather. The Khukuri comes in different sizes but for this workshop you will be making a small(6 inch) blade. Take part in creating your own knife. The process implies cutting/hammering a raw piece of iron into the shape of the blade, grinding the blade and making the handle. (note that for safety reasons, the blade grinding will only be done by the host and we advise guests to stay clear of the sparks during this process). Take a Knife as a souviner.

This was one of the best experiences ive had not just in Nepal but in all experiences ive had, he starts with a peice of leaf spring of truck and makes it with your help, got to bang out steal, cut bits off and grinding, it was such a unique experience 👏 highly recommend and Sajeena who drove us there was a great host and even dropped my Flip-flops back at the hotel after I left them there, she was amazing. Plus the knife you go away with is truly unique with your own name or initials on it 😊

This was a fantastic, unique experience, learning and watching the art of Khukuri construction under the steady eye of Indra, a 50-year veteran smith with a great sense of humor and masterful skill with forge and hammer. I did not expect the process to yield such a refined piece, but in two hours, the master smith produced (with some hammering and grinding help from me), I had a blade that looked and performs better than most khukuri you'll find for sale in Kathmandu. The cost was reasonable, the setting authentically rustic, and the class size (we had three) perfect for the class. I also recommend Jivraj, who was my guide for the class, and provided excellent translation assistance and cultural insights.

What an absolute unforgettable experience. The logistics from comes to pick up / drop off were perfect. The experience itself was amazing and certainly brought home to me how much hard work and dedication it takes to craft such a work of art. Highly recommended, you won't be disappointed!!!!

Indra Uncle was affable and friendly, and his son and nephew (who are learning under him) were friendly and professional. There was an issue with scheduling, but everyone was very accommodating and we managed to make our knives. Hammering the metal and shaping it was very rewarding, and all the blacksmiths made necessary adjustments to ensure that we each had perfect but unique khukuri. Each wooden handle is unique as well. The guide, Sajeena, was very sweet as well, and fun to talk to. Overall I would 100% recommend. Just make sure you wear long sleeves! I have some burn scars on my arm from the forge, and picking soot out of an open burn wound is no fun ;P

Matt and I had an absolutely incredible experience at this Khukuri knife-making workshop in Kathmandu. We were so appreciative that they picked us up and dropped us off at our hotel, which made everything very easy and welcoming from the start. The workshop took place behind their beautiful family home, which made the experience feel extremely personal and authentic. They welcomed us with delicious milk tea and treated us with such genuine hospitality throughout the day. We loved being able to hand forge our own knives completely from scratch and even personalize them. The instructors were patient, knowledgeable, and clearly passionate about sharing their craft and culture with us. This was far more than just a workshop — it was a rewarding hands-on cultural experience and one of our favorite memories from Kathmandu. We would highly recommend this experience to anyone visiting Nepal!

Incredible experience helping craft the Khukuri Gurkhas knife yourself totally from the start to finish using hard steel, in the home of a local Nepali blacksmiths house. Nice and personal and you even have the chance to personalise your knife with a small engraving.

This was the best thing we have done while travelling. Communication was excellent via whatsapp, pick up and drop off covered in cost. Namrata was an amazing host and translator! Make sure you have lots of battery on your phone to take photos! Our family just loved this activity and having their own special knife to keep that they helped make. The blacksmith and his son were wonderful and friendly and kind! 1000% would recommend! A must-do activity!!
