Itinerary
Your tour guide will pick you up from your hotel and drive you to the killing fields of Choeung Ek Genocide Center – 9 miles away south of Phnom Penh. The infamous killing fields have a bloody history. Once an orchard and a Chinese cemetery, the Khmer Rogue, lead by Pol Pot, turned the place into what became known as the killing fields, where they executed around 20.000 victim. Over three years, they massacred and buried 2.5 million people. After remembering the dead, return to Phnom Penh to visit Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum (S21). Meaning hill of the poisonous trees, Pol Pot turned a once popular high school into a high security prison. 20,000 people were imprisoned there, many of whom were tortured for information. Today it serves as a museum and a reminder of darker days. Your guide will return you to your hotel or guesthouse.
The most notorious of the 189 known interrogation centers in Cambodia was S-21, housed in a former school and now called Tuol Sleng for the hill on which it stands. Between 14,000 and 17,000 prisoners were detained, tortured there, often in primitive brick cells built in former classrooms.

Our guide was fantastic. The knowledge and lived stories he told us were priceless. Please book a tour with a guide and not using the audio guide - a real guide with personal stories made the trip. Thank you
Excellent, informative and comprehensive tour guided by Ran. A deep and thorough dive into Cambodian history with focus on this terrible period .
Highly recommend this tour! Ran was friendly and knowledgeable, telling stories from his personal experience of his family being affected by the Pol Pot regime and growing up in Cambodia. Book this
Highly recommend requesting Ran as your tour guide! He lived the Khmer Rouge as a little boy and could tell us what things were like firsthand in Cambodia during the dark time. He was so knowledgeable and we are glad we hired him for the tour vs doing the museums on our own so that we could learn more. The driver, Huot, also picked up/ dropped off right at the door of our hotel and offered cold waters during the drive.
Amazing experience!!! My guide Ran was fantastic. He was so knowledgeable and brave for sharing his story with us. Highly recommend the tour as you get personalized stories and all the transport is planned. Love that they offer an afternoon time slot!!
We had a great 1/2 day tour with our guide, Ran. I knew very little about the Killing Fields and the Khmer Rouge regime. Ran not only shared his personal family story, but explained how this brutal period came about from beginning to end. Although it was a somber and sobering experience, we also learned how that time period shaped Cambodians into modern day life. Travel is as much about education as it is about having fun. We would highly recommend this tour to anyone wanting to learn about this era of Cambodian history.
The guide was really knowledgeable and used his own experience of the time to really hit home on such a tragic moment in history.
The private car transfer was smooth and reassuring — punctual, comfortable, and stress-free to navigate between sites. A small but genuinely appreciated touch: cold drinking water was provided throughout, which matters enormously under the Phnom Penh sun. That said, the allocated time at each site felt rushed. Choeung Ek and Tuol Sleng are not places you should hurry through — the weight of what happened there demands more than a glance. I strongly recommend renting the audio guide independently at your own expense, which is very affordable on-site, and negotiating with for a personal longer stay especially at S-21. The tour earns its five stars for logistics; the depth of the experience, you'll have to carve out yourself. Come prepared — emotionally as much as practically.
An excellent if sombre and moving morning with Ran. A knowledgeable and engaging guide, sadly with some lived experience to draw upon. His unflinching stories brought this horrific past into focus. Thoroughly recommended.
It was very moving (at times it was a bit much information) and hearing it from a survivor made it even more emotional. They collected us on time and returned us to our hotel. The van air-condition worked well even in the heatwave we had :) Would not recommend for young children. Doing with a guide like this was much better than just hiring an audioguide.
