The Kanheri Caves are a group of caves and rock-cut monuments cut into a massive basalt outcrop in the forests of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, on the island of Salsette in the western outskirts of Mumbai, India. They contain Buddhist sculptures and relief carvings, paintings, and inscriptions, dating from the 1st century BCE to the 10th century CE. Kanheri comes from the Sanskrit Krishnagiri, which means black mountain.

I highly recommend this tour with Ravi! He was so knowledgeable and passionate, answered all my questions and walked us through at a good pace to get to truly experience it all. I learned so much, and enjoyed the beauty of the caves and the views out over the park. Rovi and Lucas were great. They together made the drive to the site smooth and interesting. Rovi did a great job explaining the history of the caves. The caves weren’t super crowded and we really enjoyed being able to explore at our own pace. Highly recommend!

I took the tour on a Sunday morning in Monsoon with a charming and very knowledgeable guide called Kavitha. Kavitha gave an excellent explanation of the history of the caves and was able to answer all my questions. Whilst there were a lot of visitors it was wonderful to find an oasis of nature in Mumbai. Highly recommended!
