Itinerary
Begin your journey at Kanazawa’s striking station, featuring the iconic Tsuzumi Gate and Motenashi Dome.
Step back into the Edo period as you ride into one of Japan’s best-preserved geisha districts. Your guide will explain the origins of the chaya (teahouse) culture, the strict social hierarchy of Kanazawa’s merchant class, and how traditional arts like shamisen and tea ceremony thrived behind these latticed wooden facades. Learn why this district still echoes with the elegance of old Japan, and where geisha continue to perform today.
One of Japan’s Three Great Gardens, Kenrokuen offers more than just seasonal beauty—it’s a masterclass in feudal-era landscape design. Stroll through its meticulously planned paths as your guide explains the six traditional garden attributes it embodies (spaciousness, seclusion, artificiality, antiquity, water features, and panoramic views). Hear stories of how lords of the Kaga domain shaped this space not only for pleasure but to reflect their political power and aesthetics.
Cycle around the imposing white walls of Kanazawa Castle, the seat of the powerful Maeda clan for over 280 years. Your guide will share insights into the architecture—from fire-resistant storehouses to maze-like defensive gates—and the strategic importance of the castle in maintaining Kanazawa’s semi-autonomous status during the Tokugawa shogunate.
Tucked behind the castle grounds, this lesser-known gem was once the private garden of the feudal lord. Recently restored using historical records, it provides a quiet, meditative counterpoint to Kenrokuen. Your guide will walk you through the symbolism in its design and the role gardens played in diplomacy and inner-court life.
Ride to the stone-paved lanes lined with earthen walls and discover the lives of Kanazawa’s elite warrior class. As you explore the former samurai streets and canals of Nagamachi, you’ll hear how the samurai adapted to peacetime roles under the Maeda rule, and how their values of loyalty, restraint, and honour still echo in the culture today.

Amazing tour with a kind and knowledgeable guide (Gori). Really enjoyed the less frenetic vibe in Kanazawa after arriving in Japan and spending a couple of days in Tokyo. This is a very beautiful city and a lovely region of Japan. Using the e-bikes was very easy (provided you know how to ride a bike). Learned a lot about the Samurai and Geisha.
Relaxing tour, very informative, covered a lot of good attractions in a short period of time and receptive to questions. Rina is an all-star with historical information along with current Kanazawa events (and dinner recommendations!). We enjoyed the whole tour especially tea time and in the gardens. We had a sighting of a geisha as well. It was a fun afternoon.
A great tour, very good knowledge of the city. Good pace. Was happy to take us shopping, anything we wanted
The half day e-bike tour with Rina is highly recommended! It is a very fun way to see some of the popular places in Kanazawa. Having a knowledgeable, friendly and engaging guide makes the experience memorable! I would highly recommend this excursiion.
Uri was exceptional as a guide. So personable, kind and helpful. She asked us what we wanted to do in advance and she designed a tour for us which deepened out appreciation of this lovely city. We would highly highly recommend her to guide you and help you appreciate Kanazawa.
Very interesting tour, well planned and executed. Information well understood and very comprehensive
Great way for me and my 12 year old daughter to see the city. It was great to be able to use the bikes for the rest of the day.
Highlight of our time in Kanazawa! Our guide, Lina, was so kind, patient, knowledgeable and funny. She guided us to spots we would have never found otherwise! Highly recommend.
Nothing beats a a bicycle tour with a local when you’re new in town. This one was kind of exceptional though... Rina was our fabulous guide today and took us on a four-hour cultural and historical tour. She really knows her stuff! She’s fun and kind, and really is an outstanding tour guide. We learned so much about Geisha, samurai, gardens, tea, construction, snow, roads, earthquakes, places to eat, etc etc. Thank you Rina! I’ll be sure to tell all my friends about Beyond Kanazawa tours.
Recommend this trip for anyone visiting Kanazawa as it visits all/most of the key places you may consider to see. It provides ideas which places to visit again for a bit longer. Very knowledgeable guide and a good pace of this 4 hr tour
