Description

Discover Dordrecht on a private walking tour through the oldest city of Holland. With your own knowledgeable local guide, you explore a historic city shaped by trade, water, and faith. Once the economic heart of medieval Holland, Dordrecht played a key role in the early history of the Dutch Republic. During this private guided tour, you walk along historic harbors, cobbled streets, and past elegant merchant houses, while your guide explains the city’s importance in trade and politics. You see the imposing Grote Kerk and hear about the First Assembly of the Free States in 1572. The private tour of Dordrecht takes place entirely on foot in the compact historic center and normally lasts about 1.5 hours. Because this is a private walking tour, the pace and focus can be adapted to your interests. This guided walking tour is ideal for travelers who want depth, historical context, and a quieter alternative to the larger Dutch cities.

Itinerary

15 min

This is where we start the tour: in front of the statue of these two famous brothers. Let's find out what these two meant for the Dutch Republic and how they got to their tragic end.

15 min

We will pass by the Big Church of Dordrecht. The oldest parts of this church date back to the late 13th century! Now it is still an icon of the city.

15 min

We will not skip the town hall of Dordrecht. This building has quite a history, going back to the 16th century. The current facade however, is a product of the 19th century.

15 min

During the tour, we will also see parts of the old harbour of Dordrecht: once one of the most important trading cities of The Dutch Republic.

15 min

The Groothoofdspoort is the city gate at the sport where 3 rivers come together. Since the 13th century, this has been a very recognisable entrance into the city.

DeWitt family tours their ancestral hometown.

Words cannot express how wonderful this tour was for my family. Dordrecht is the ancestral home of my family, DeWitt. The tour operator provided a historian to specifically cater this tour to the history of our family. The tour began at the statue of my ancestors, then included the birthplace, workplace, and church of my ancestors. The truly most emotional and moving part of the tour was entering the beautiful church and viewing the burial crypts of my ancestors. Our tour guide's thoughtful planning and historical knowledge made this tour an experience my family will cherish for a lifetime. Our hearts are full ♥️ 💓 ❤️. Thank you.

Veerle, the best tour guide, but you have to go to Dordrecht, Netherlands to find her.

We had a Viking Cruise and our shore excursion in Dordrecht, Netherlands on 17 June was a walking tour of the town. Our tour guide was Veerle and she was excellent! I believe she is the best tour guide I have ever had. She was very knowledgeable and passionate about Dordrecht. She intertwined a lot of information with stories and humor. She kept our group moving and engaged. I loved her approach, her knowledge, her passion and her humor.

Want an entertaining tour? Undiscovered Holland

In doing research about the history of the Netherlands, I became really curious about Dordrecht, and particular stories about it being spared in the St. Elizabeth’s day flood. Our guide brought the history of the city to life. He was both informative and funny, regaling us with local lore. He showed us interesting architectural features, scenic views and even had tips for places to shop and directed us to a fabulous lunch spot. Highly recommend.
