The castle was registered as world heritage in 1993. The castle is known for its specific architecture. The construction of the castle would represent sophistication of their defence system and political power. This was the tallest castle in Japan which meant that this castle represented once the highest power and sophistication of military power in the samurai period. In 1346 Akamatsusadanori started to construct the castle during the civilisation war in Japan many other people took over the castle after that. During the time of under different ownership the castle changed its shape but the Castle we can see today was the same shape as 1909. End of samurai rule in Japan, the owner of the castle gave the castle to the new-formed government. After that the government decided to use the castle as educational and historical display purpose. Because of that reason, the castle is now open to the public.
Mt. Shosya Ropeway to access Engyo-ji temple will be suspended due to the annual maintenance from February 5, 2026 to March 18, 2026. Engyo-ji is Tendai sect temple on the top of the mount Shosha. The mountain is located the north side of the city. This is a very authentic temple which is constructed in 970. It has a resemblance of the very famous temple in Kyoto, which also constructed on the side of the mountain. The wooden construction of the main building and dining hall were registered as one of Japanese culture heritage. Also, it was one of the filming locations of Tom Cruise’s Last Samurai.
Mt. Shosha Ropeway to access Engyo-ji temple will be suspended due to the annual maintenance from February 5, 2026 to March 18, 2026. Mount Shosha (書写山, Shoshazan) is the site of Engyoji (円教寺, Engyōji), an atmospheric temple complex with a history of over 1000 years. Located at the edge of Himeji City, the mountain can be accessed in only 30 minutes from the city center by bus and ropeway. Engyoji's temple buildings are spread over a spacious, densely forested area on the mountain top. From the ropeway station it takes a 10-15 minute walk uphill to reach the Niomon Gate and another 10-15 minutes to reach the Maniden, a beautiful wooden temple hall, constructed on pillars on a steep slope. Alternatively, a minibus operates between the upper ropeway station and the Maniden every 20 minutes (500 yen for a round trip).
If you want to enjoy a bit of European art in Japan, you can! The building of the museum used to be an old army headquarter; it has a unique construction of using red bricks. The museum has strong focus on Belgian art because one of the Belgian city is a sister city of Himeji. The museum collections include traditional European art to modern art. The museum also exhibits local artist collections. There is a café that is very popular amongst tourists. If you walk around the castle it’s a great place to stop over to have a coffee.
The garden was constructed for 100 anniversary of the city. It’s about 3.5ha, a large garden next to the castle. The land was originally belonged to the part of the castle however in 1618 they excavated some of the oldest settlements. Now the garden was designed around its original excavated plan. It’s divided into nine different gardens. Inside gardens you can enjoy tea or food at the restaurant and have relaxing time. The garden is next to the castle so you can enjoy it before or after your castle visit. You can relax and forget about noise from inner city.
Due to a mention in a very old manuscript, Himeji was given a name as birthplace of Japanese Sake. This particular Sake brewery is famous for female member of stuffs who are making sake. Inside the brewery, you can taste different sake and purchase them of course! If you don’t drink, the restaurant front of it, you can try healthy tofu product or healthy course meals. There is a kiosk outside, you can buy or try sweetie sake (non alcohol) or soft cream. So even you are not a drinker, you can enjoy other products.
This shrine was built in 733 on top of Hiromine Mountain. This is famous shrine because Shinto (the Japanese original religion) and Buddhism (later came from India) were studied together in this shrine. So the construction of the shrine is a mixture of Shinto and Buddhism. There was a samurai captain who made lots of wealth selling eye drops with this shrine’s amulet. From the shrine, you can enjoy the great view of the Himeji castle to the sea front.
This public building that comes with shopping center, restaurants, public halls and its rooftop is open to public for free to enjoy the view of the Himeji castle. When you’re near to the castle you may not be able to enjoy whole view however if you come to the top of this complex you can see the clear view of the castle because there is nothing obstructing your view!

This was a wonderful experience a little far off from the crowds in Osaka and Kyoto. It was a bit rainy so our visit to Mt. Shosha/Engyo-ji Temple was very peaceful and quiet. We enjoyed the visit to Koko-en Garden and Himeji castle though they were a bit more crowded. Yama-san was a great guide who knew all the best photo spots.
Many thanks for your most kind and thoughtful comment. I am very much glad to know that you have enjoyed the tour with me. I have also had a very happy time with you all. Thanks to the rain (?), the spots were not so crowded and the green color of tree leaves was just amazing, am I right! The only thing I am sorry for was we could not see "Shirasagi" or white egret at the castle. That means you should come back there again! Ha ha ha! Doomo Arigato Gozaimashita, Yama
A standout among the guides that we have met in our travels. Norio is a great guide and conveyed so much information in such a short amount of time. He made it an amazing day in Himeji despite the significant rain we experienced. He worked super hard to flex with our train schedule, and adjusting to the extremely wet day. He took care to help us with all the logistics to make it a memorable day without challenges. Thank you for a great day! We will talk about our day in Himeji for a long time.
Thank you so much for your wonderful review. We visited Himeji Castle and Shoshazan Engyoji Temple. It was a rainy day all day long, but I was relieved because your group was so kind. Thanks again I had a memorable day with you all. From your guide, Norio
We did the Himeji Castle tour today. Our guide was Yama, he was fantastic and very knowledgeable.
Many thanks for your most kind and considerate comment. I am glad to know that you have enjoyed the tour with me. I have also had a very nice and happy time with you two. Actually, in spite of a very bad weather, Himeji Castle was really amazing and beautiful, am I right? How about "Eki-soba" (Chinese noodles in Japanese broth) at the food court of Himeji Station? I hope you like it. Doomo Arigato Gozaimashita, Yama
Our guide Hiro san, was highly knowledgeable and a native of Himeji. She communicated with me from the get go and planned the visit according to our interests. She met us at the station, explained the history even as we walked along the main road to get to the castle. She gave us a lot of facts on the construction and the history of the castle. Hiro san then took us to the Engyoji Temple - a very serene space and once again told us history of the place and shared her childhood experiences of going to the place. Hiro san was very patient, detailed and kind and made us feel very comfortable. She even dropped us back at the station! Excellent experience. Highly recommend.
I had a great day with Noboru as my guide, he has a great knowledge of the castle and its defences, exactly what I was looking for. He put together the itinerary I was interested in, with the tour also including the nearby Koko-en garden and Engyo-ji temple via the Mt. Shosha ropeway. The tour was well paced, and I learnt a lot about the area and its history, thanks Noburu! I definitely recommend the tour for anyone interested in learning more about the castle and the area.
Thank you very much for your wonderful review. I am pleased to know that you had a great time in Himeji. The timing was perfect to enjoy the cherry blossoms in full bloom! Hope to see you again next time you come back to Japan! - Noboru
We had a very nice tour with our excellent guide Yama-San. He was very knowledgeable and spoke clear English.
I appreciate your most kind and thoghtful comment very much. I am very much glad to know you have enjoyed the tour with me. I have also had a very happy time with you all. I do hope I can see you again sometime somewhere, maybe in my home city of Kobe. Doomo Arigato Gozaimashita, Yama
We had a wonderful time with Yama-san today. We explored Himeji castle and the gardens as well as Nadagiku Sake Brewery. Yama-san was so wonderful and knowledgeable throughout our tour. He knows all the history and takes great photos for you so you don’t miss out on group shots. We wish we were staying longer to do another of his tours, like sake tasting. Look forward to our next visit and tour! Thank you!!
Yama was an excellent friendly guide. He made us smile and chuckle as he pointed out the history and defences of the castle, giving us tips on our Japanese and finding the king of the koi for us in the koko-en. we thoroughly enjoyed our day in Himeji. Thankyou Yama-san.
I appreciate very much your most kind and thoughtful comment. I am very much glad to know that you have enjoyed the tour with me. I have also enjoyed the tour with you and your nice and beautiful family. Sorry that we did not have a chance to see "Shirasagi Birde" or egret at the castle, so you should come back there, okay? Ha Ha ha! I am just concerned what you had for lunch and how you liked it. I do hope I can see you again sometime, maybe in my home city of Kobe next time. Doomo Arigato Gozaimashita! Yama
We had an amazing tour of Himeji! Our guide, Norio, was incredibly knowledgeable, friendly, and wonderful with our two kids. We were a group of seven traveling through Japan for two weeks, and this day was truly a highlight. We started at Himeji Castle, and Norio brought the history of the “White Heron” to life with great stories and insights we never would have learned on our own. Next, we visited the serene Engyoji Temple on Mount Shosha—absolutely beautiful and such a peaceful escape with stunning views. For lunch, we stopped at Nadagiku Sake Brewery, where the meal was outstanding. The food was fresh and flavorful, and the setting inside the historic brewery made it even more special. Overall, the day was perfectly paced, informative, and fun for both adults and kids. We highly recommend this tour—and especially Norio—if you’re visiting Himeji! Thank you Norio!!!
Wow, thank you so much for your great review! Yes, we visited Himeji Castle and Shoshazan Engyoji Temple. Both sites are beautiful and the representative destinations of Himeji. We explored and took a lot of pictures. And the lunch at Nadagiku sake brewery was fantastic too. Thanks again I had a special time with your family group. From your guide, Norio
Yama was an excellent guide. We had some trouble with our digital tickets and at each step he smoothed the way and helped us get things done. He told us a lot about the culture and history and he helped us all day to see things we wouldn’t have seen otherwise. He was great with the girls and he was great answering my husband‘s questions. I would recommend him and his service at any time.
Many thanks for your most kind and considerate comment. I am very much glad to know that you have enjoyed the tour with me. I have also had a very nice and happy time with you and your nice and beautiful family, although the weather was not so good and a little bid cold. How was the food at the food court of Himeji Station? Good? I do hope I can see you again, maybe, in my home city of Kobe next time. Doomo Arigato Gozaimashita, Yama
