Itinerary
Our trekkers gets picked up from their respective hotels or apartments at 7h15 early morning and drive approximately 30 minutes to Daan Viljoen Game Reserve for hiking. The reserve is located approximately 24 kilometres outside Windhoek in the scenic Khomas Hockland high hill mountains. This is the Rooibos 9 kilometers hiking trail, plus the 3 kilometers Wag-'n-Bietjie Trail, totaling a distance of 12 kilometers half day Hiking. Here travelers can see diverse wildlife and enjoy a variety of outdoor activities - due to the absence of large predators, making it safe for exploration on foot.
While on Hiking, our travelers can also enjoy viewing some key attraction and activities such as; 1. Wildlife Viewing - giraffe, blue wildebeest, Oryx (gemsbok), kudu, mountain zebra, springbok and other antelopes. 2. Birds Watching - the park is home to over 200 bird species, including endemics like the Monteiro's Hornbill, Ruppell's Parrot, other birds and a dam area with permanent source of water attracting bountiful birdlife. 3. Hiking Trail - travelers can enjoy a guided exploration on well-marked walking paths, learning more about the plants of the reserve including the geology of the Nature Reserve. The hiking trail ends approximately 12h30 in the afternoon. After the hiking, we will walk back to the office and have access to the rest room to freshen up before driving back and arriving to Windhoek approximately 13h30. End of tour. It was a great walk. We saw lots of wildlife, including giraffes. Be prepared for stony trails and some ups and downs. Petrus was the guide and he know an amazing amount about the animals, birds and trees. What I appreciated most was that Petrus was sensitive to my needs. We had planned a 9km walk, but I began to tire early and Petrus noticed this and suggested a short cut back that cut 4kms out of the walk, but still contained lots of nice views and interesting things. It was a great day. The park did not disappoint and we had a lot of fun viewing and talking about the animals.

Be prepared for clambering over rocks and some steepish inclines. It’s a great hike with good views and wildlife. Our guide was very knowledgable and took into consideration our pace. Make sure you wear long pants and hiking boots recommended.

This hike in Daan Viljoen with Petrus as my guide was incredible! I was picked up on time and we drove to the reserve, then set off on foot. We were lucky to see so many animals: giraffes near the road, warthogs, wildebeest, impalas, hyrax, and an ostrich, as well as multiple birds. Petrus shared lots of interesting information about different plants and animals, and complemented them with explanations for how they may be used in rural settings and anecdotes from his own experience growing up in a village setting. We took a break in a peaceful creek-like setting, and Petrus provided water, juices, snacks and fruit. Overall it was an amazing experience!
