Our trip began with two days of hiking in the stunning Piatra Craiului mountains following by visits to bear hides in the eves, then two nights in the wilderness at Comisu and Bunea hides. Bears were plentiful at both hides (including mothers with cubs) but worth knowing that these bears are fed to coax them close. That said, they are only fed small amounts of corn by rangers who evidently love them dearly. So whilst this can’t be considered truly natural behaviour, it’s nonetheless well managed, small scale and respectful. Far more exciting were the genuinely wild spots – bison and bear – from the hides. This requires a considerable commitment both in terms of time and patience, but the scale and magnitude of the Romanian wilderness is unmatched in my experience and simply sitting in silence, disconnected from the world, watching the forest and the mountains breath was utter heaven. And when a bear does make an appearance (if! – we got one in the last 10 mins just as we were putting our boots back on to leave), it’s as special as a wildlife experience as there could ever be. Our two guides were both excellent. Valentin, with us for the first two days, was a font of historical knowledge and an education. Cristina, who took us to the hides, was wonderful and taught us all abut the local fauna and flora. Her knowledge and love – be it for a huge bison or a tiny mountain flower – was infectious. My friends and I are hoping to join her on one of her 5 day hiking trips next year. You haven’t seen the last of us yet Cristina! 😊 Lastly a special thank you to Rita who organised the whole trip seamlessly for us. Multimesc! 😊
We booked directly with Outdoor holidays. Rita was very helpful and organised, with our guide Robert, a tailor made bear and nature 3 day trip for our family of 8 adults. It was very easy communicating with Rita via WhatsApp and she answered all my questions quickly and put together the most perfect trip. Robert, our guide was great. We did so much in the 3 days and had a wonderful time. I would definitely recommend them. Thank you.
