All we had to do was enjoy ourselves

This was a true holiday - all the planning and organisation was done for us, all we had to do was enjoy ourselves. We had a thorough explanation of how to use and charge our e-bikes supporting our confidence. Every morning we left our bags by the door and hopped on our bikes, looking forward to the freedom and exploration to come. It was up to us to decide where we would stop on the trail to catch up with South Island life in the 1800s. We passed many apple and pear trees laden with fruit and learned that they grew from the discarded fruit of rail passengers. We marveled at the engineering feats of the railway stonemasons that created the railway tunnels. Wait until you see how spectacular the Poolburn Gorge and Ida Valley are and then the next day there is the Taieri Gorge to admire. Such beauty is good for the soul. The places we stayed were so lovely, the Wedderburn Cottages were a highlight as the expansive views were breathtaking and the 200m walk to the pub was no trouble at all. We were able to ride side by side on the trail for most of the time, this was such an ideal experience for us as a couple. Top tip is to pack snacks/drinks for impromptu picnics. Next time I would do more research into what to see and do on the trail. We are already planning our next e-bike tour.

Rail Trail Cycle

The organization was excellent as were the bikes. Although our friend booked it, I understand the booking process was straightforward. However, we were all told twice that our overall distance was “about 40km” and we paced our selves for that. We had also been told that if we allowed 1.5 hours from Chatto Creek to get back to Clyde, that would be enough time. It wasn’t and actually the overall distance was 57km! It was also extremely windy so that held us up as well. All in all we felt that it was a great experience but double confirm the distance before you set off!!

Operator response

Thanks for your feedback. We are sorry to hear there was some confusion about the distance and timing. Wind can certainly make the ride more challenging. We are pleased to hear you still had a great experience and enjoyed your day on the trail.

Beyond expectations. Wonderful tour.

Excellent company to do the four day bike ride with. Sandra, Deb and the boys helped us get sorted and sent us off with confidence. The e-bikes were great. We needed a little extra help and someone was always at the end of the phone. All the accommodation was comfortable. The food at the old School house was next level delicious. I highly recommend booking with Kiwi journeys. They went above and beyond to make sure that everything was organised.
