Description

Join Heidelberg resident Erin McGann on a winding self-guided audio tour of the picturesque Altstadt, the old town of this fascinating German city on the banks of the Neckar River.  Take in the famous Church of the Holy Ghost in the center of the main market square, discover the carvings that allowed residents to check the legal size of their pretzels (really!), hear stories of the catastrophic floods, find out which buildings are the oldest, hear how the university students got so rowdy they ended up with their own prison, and learn about the romantic history of our ruined castle.  The tour is ready whenever you are and the audio plays automatically at exactly the right time and place using your smartphone's GPS and the VoiceMap mobile app, which also works offline.

Itinerary

Pass by

Enjoy the flexibility of a GPS-enabled audio tour of Heidelberg’s Altstadt whenever you’re ready to take it. Erin McGann, history geek, writer, and Heidelberg resident, takes you on a walk through the winding streets of the picturesque Old Town. Erin lets you in on some local secrets including stories about the dramatic floods that plagued the residents for hundreds of years, the secrets of the German street names, what the pretzel carvings on the Church of the Holy Ghost mean, why there is a student prison, and stories about the residents of the famous castle. Download the tour, pop your phone in your pocket, and let this enthusiastic Heidelberger resident take you around the town she loves.

Pass by

The center of the Altstadt, the Marktplatz, or Market Square, is where you can sit outside in the summer and enjoy a coffee, or a Glühwein in December at our gorgeous Christmas Market. There’s a lot of history in this square, and we’ll do a full circle on the audio tour.

Pass by

The Alte Brücke, or Old Bridge, is a bit of a misnomer. Built in 1877, it’s quite young compared to the rest of Heidelberg. Depending on who you ask, it’s either the 11th or the eighth bridge on that spot. Floods are a common experience in Heidelberg’s history, and if you know where to look, you can find the marker for the highest flood ever to hit the town.

Pass by

The Student Prison, or Student Karzer was an important part of student life for over 135 years, from 1778 to 1914. No, students weren’t put in prison for bad marks, but what they did get up to was driving the town residents crazy. So much so, the phrase ‘letting the pigs loose’ in German is a local idiom for getting drunk and rowdy.

Pass by

This square has been a meeting place for Heidelbergers since the 1500s, but the name Kornmarkt only came about in the 1600s. The red stone and white building here is a side of the Stadthalle, or the City Hall.

Pass by

A landmark in Heidelberg, this church holds the keys to some fascinating stories about our historic town. Why are there doors halfway down the building? Have the shops under the eaves always been there? Find out more as we circle the building in the audio tour.

Pass by

Jesuitenkirche is the main Catholic church in Heidelberg. The variegated red stone is from the Neckar valley quarries, and it practically lights up from within in the evening light. The construction began in 1712, and finally finished with the addition of the tower in 1872.

Pass by

The Castle is located only halfway up the hill. You can take the old funicular, with its 100-year-old wooden carriages, up the last leg to the summit. There are incredible views over the city, many nature trails, a falconry open to visitors, and a small amusement park for children. You can, of course, make the climb yourself.

Great overview of the old...

Great overview of the old city. The guide was easy to use and informative. There was flexibility to move quickly or take more time to stop and reflect.

Good descriptions of an interesting town

Good self guided tour, it was clear when to stop & restart. We had one audio on a phone between 4 people which was adequate.

Great e patience and tour

While I do enjoy a guide-led tour and that is my first choice, if time is no object. For Heidelberg we simply needed a guided tour so that we could understand some of the history and the historical buildings. We took a chance on the self guided tour and I would SO do it again if I didn’t have time for a full tour. Technically the tour was great - kept up with us while walking and, since we used our own earbuds, very easy to hear. A fab experience!

Wunderbar!

We appreciated the recording stopping at the sights and directing us to where to go next! The information shared was meaningful.

Not worth the cost

Monotone uneventful very basic city tour. We found it dull and looked up way more about the city sites when we got home. Save the money and read the info online.

Operator response

Hi there, I'm sorry that you were disappointed with this tour. While this is a highly rated VoiceMap tour, we understand that it may not be to everyone's liking or personal taste. This tour is of Heidelberg's Old Town and so won't cover the entire city and its sights. I'm sorry that this product didn't meet your expectations. Regards, Brent

Great option for self guided tour

This is a great option if you have a couple of hours and want an overview of highlights of Heidelberg. Very easy to use and the app lets you know if you’ve wandered off course (which is easy to do as you get taken in by the sights). You can pause along the way to take in a bit more of the points and restart at your convenience. Highly recommend you break to go in to the Studenten Karzer and the museum. Note: this tour starts and Marktplatz!

Great little audio walking tour!

Really enjoyable audio walking tour. Very easy to follow, didn't need to use map on phone once! Some great information and not too much detail which some tours give. I thoroughly enjoyed it and would recommend it for anyone wanting a short informative walk round the old town. Thanks Erin!

Easy to follow

Very easy to understand and follow. I would have liked more information about the streets, castle and monuments and a GPS guide back to the starting point.

Not worth the money

Very disappointed we abandoned using it because we couldn't start it from wherever you want it was limited to starting in the same place it needs to be flexible as the traffic through the castle is erratic. In addition too too much time to download. Basically a waste of money.

Operator response

Hi Karen We understand that it isn't always possible to start the tour at exactly the starting point. This is why we have a Resume feature that allows you to pick up from your nearest location. Did you try using the Resume feature? Keep well, Alicia

See it in the evening.

We took a 5:30 pm tour. Not as crowded. Not as hot. Our guide was great. It is a big climb up - so be prepared.
