Haleakala Sunset and Stargazing Audio Tour

Itinerary

15 min

Make a quick stop here for some snacks and water. There is no food once you’re in the park.

60 min

Just before Haleakala is a charming little town named Makawao. Makawao is dubbed the biggest little town in Upcountry Maui and has its roots in the cattle industry. In recent years, Makawao has evolved into a charming art town where you will find galleries and workshops of local artists, many with hawaii-inspired themes, as well as lots of tasty local food.

30 min

Hosmer Grove is located just outside the national park entrance at an elevation of 6,800 feet. Here you will see trees from all around the world, including: juniper and fir from North America cedar and seigi pine from Japan and eucalyptus trees from Australia This is a short, relaxing, half-mile loop trail. It’s a great spot to stop and breathe in the fresh air from all the foliage around you. It’s also a completely different landscape from the ones you’ll see later in the tour.

60 min

This 8-mile trek is actually rated hard, but we suggest you just hike the first mile, then turn around the way you came. You’ll still get a great view of a crater rim in the condensed version and you'll have more time for the rest of the activities on this tour!

15 min

Head in the clouds? It will be at this overlook. Most visitors pass up Leleiwi Overlook but in our opinion, it’s actually one the best on the mountain! At the lookout, watch as clouds roll by. In one moment, the fog will be so dense you can barely see the terrain around you, in the next, it will clear giving you a panoramic view of the crater. It’s truly a sight to behold!

15 min

At this overlook, you’ll see the crater floor from a completely different perspective. It’s definitely worth a stop!

30 min

This mini hike starts at the visitor center and takes you to an overlook with a great view of the crater. The walk is just .5 miles, and it’s well worth it. If you’re thinking to yourself, “another overlook?” Yes, but we promise -- this one has great views! Pro tip! The nearby visitor center is a great spot to use the restroom.

30 min

As you make your way back from the summit, you can return to the visitor center parking lot to hike Sliding Sands Trail. It is a rigorous 11-mile hike, but we recommend you just hike to the first switchback or until you get tired. You don’t need to travel far to see the expansive view of the massive crater open up before you! When you are ready to return, just retrace your steps back the same way you came. If you plan on doing the whole hike, or a large portion of it, remember to bring water. The area isn’t shaded and you’ll be walking for a long time.

20 min

About a minute past the visitor center at the end of the road, you’ll find an overlook called Pu‘u‘ula‘ula or Red Hill. This is the actual summit of Mount Haleakala at 10,023 feet above sea level. From here, you can watch as the sun sets for the night into the arid, mars-like landscape of Haleakala.

Family with teen children; Haleakalā

Excellent pacing; well narrated with island vibe. We did all stops; albeit some abbreviated. Program even endorsed by the park ranger we met on a trail. Enjoyable for entire trip. Finally: an app that works as advertised. Never a glitch.

Operator response

We’re so happy you enjoyed the pacing, narration, and island vibe! That’s amazing to hear a park ranger even endorsed it along the way. Thanks for sharing your experience glad the app made your trip smooth and glitch-free!

A pleasant and informative trip

While using, be sure to keep a close eye on the map lest you inadvertently stray. The music plays even when you are far off the path.

The narration was engaging

The Maui Sunset & Stargazing at Haleakalā Audio Driving Tour was fantastic! The narration was engaging—informative but not overwhelming. I loved that it wasn’t just constant talking; there was a nice balance with instrumental music between stops, which made the drive even more enjoyable. The tour gave helpful suggestions and pointed out things to look for ahead on the road, making the experience smooth and stress-free. Highly recommend for anyone visiting Haleakalā!

A must have for Maui

Came across this app on Trip Advisor and I cannot say enough good about it! It has completely changed the way we vacation. It is probably the most thorough, useful, and exact tour guide I have ever experienced (even including the live tours I have done!) I have done a few tours on Maui with this app and it never gets old. It has everything! Including: interesting facts between stops, exact directions to many well-known and less well-known stops, tips for navigating different roads, weather cautions, tips on scheduling out your time depending on when you start the tour, up-to-date food options and restroom locations, and to round it all out - chill island songs between locations! Seriously, the best money I’ve spent on Maui. I recommend it to everyone. Please make more tours for everywhere!

Operator response

We appreciate your positive review and are thrilled to hear that you're finding our app helpful. If you have any suggestions for how we can improve, please don't hesitate to let us know.

Worthwhile

These audio tours are a great way to see the sights at your own pace without getting lost and wasting time. **note: to redeem this purchase in the Shaka Guide app you have to open the “before you go” section in your booking to get the code and instructions for the download. Do NOT pay again in the app. However the tours seem to be $5 cheaper if you purchase directly through the Shaka Guide app

Good Narrative Tour Audio

This is a good and inexpensive way to do the Haleakala sunset tour with audio narrative of things to see along the way to the mountain top. Good value for the price. A quick tip: this app burns through your phone battery fast so having a car phone cable is a must or else your phone battery will run out of juice pretty quick...

Shaka Maui

Someone can correct me if I didn’t do it right but I paid 15 dollars here and then was told(via email) to download an app were I still had to pay for the tours. I feel scammed but I would give the actual tour app Shaka Maui 5 stars. The app itself is great. Just download SHAKA MAUI and get your tour because it was AMAZING and the timing was perfect. But paying to be told to download an app where I have to pay additional was really messed. I got scammed on my birthday and yes it was for an extra 15 dollars but it left a bad feeling. Also be careful on the road to Hana! It was soooo beautiful and worth it a hundred times over.
