Goryokaku is Japan’s first Western-style star fort, built in the 19th century to defend Hakodate. Its five-pointed design symbolized Japan’s modernization and later became the stage of the Hakodate War, the last battle of the Boshin War. Today, it is a park where visitors can walk the grounds, see historical cannons, and admire cherry blossoms surrounding the star-shaped fortress each spring.
At the heart of the fort lies the reconstructed Hakodate Magistrate’s Office, once the regional government headquarters of the shogunate. Rebuilt using traditional techniques, it offers a glimpse into the politics, culture, and architecture of the late Edo period. Great way to see the city! We enjoyed the tower and the park. Very interesting experience. Rei are guide answered many questions. Was extremely knowledgeable.
A nice introduction to the history of Hakodate. The reconstruction of the Magistrate’s office was very impressive. Aya was a fantastic guide. She was able to give us fascinating insights into Japanese life as well as an impressive knowledge of Goryokaku. She also helped us with a great recommendation for lunch.
Yuri is very sweet and loves Hakodate. I learned a lot and she is very knowledgeable about Goryokaku park and tower.
