We will pick you up at your hotel, and we will travel 16 kilometers by vehicle along National Route No. 3 until we reach the beginning of the path. The adventure begins! In total, 9 kilometers (round trip) await you walking through the forest: glacial valleys, beaver farms, peat bogs and the Fuegian magic that accompanies you throughout the journey. This walk is considered of medium difficulty, and does not present significant unevenness.

Itinerary
We will make a technical stop in Valle de Lobos where the guide will show us (if necessary) the correct use and preparation of safety elements such as crampons.
En route to the Emerald Lagoon, a stop at the Carbajal Valley Lookout invites you to stop and take in one of the most imposing landscapes of Tierra del Fuego. From this scenic point, an extensive valley of glacier origin unfolds, covered with peat bogs, meandering rivers and surrounded by the imposing Fueguin mountain range. It is the ideal place to take pictures, breathe fresh air and connect with nature in its purest form. On clear days, the contrasts of colors and the breadth of landscape make this stop an unforgettable moment within the excursion.
The arrival at the Emerald Lagoon is the highlight of the walk, where nature is shown at its best. Its intense green waters, fueled by the melting of the Ojo del Albino glacier, contrast with the surrounding mountains, forests and turbulence. The landscape is serene and majestic, ideal for lounging, taking photographs and enjoying a unique moment in the heart of Fueguina mountain range. It is a place that invites you to disconnect, appreciate the silence and take an unforgettable memory of the end of the world.

When I read the description of this tour, I thought that I would have no problems because all that was indicated was: Not recommended for travelers with back problems, No heart problems or other serious medical conditions, Not recommended for pregnant travelers, Most people can participate, and if you come with inappropriate attire, you will be refused. I complied with all those, and even if I use a walking cane to support my balance, I can still do treks. We even hurried the night before to a gear rental shop to rent proper hiking boots. Unfortunately, when the guide saw my condition on the day of the tour, we were denied participation and I was really sad this happened but I understand that they are just concerned for my safety. They offered a full refund but I did not want the day to go to waste (aside from the boots rental fee which went to waste already) and so they transferred us to the afternoon tour, the Classic 4 x 4 drive to the lakes of Ushuaia and it was a wonderful and enjoyable tour. So fair enough and all's well that ends well.
Thank you, Maria, for taking the time to share your experience. We can imagine how disappointing it must have felt not being able to take part in the Laguna Esmeralda trek after preparing for it, especially having arranged your gear the day before. We truly appreciate your understanding of the decision made on site, where safety comes first in this type of environment. With more than 22 years of experience, situations like this are handled directly by our team, prioritizing safety while also making sure the day can still be enjoyed. In your case, continuing with our 4x4 experience to the lakes of Ushuaia allowed the day to remain a positive part of your trip, and we’re glad to know you enjoyed it. That’s the way we approach each experience: being present, taking responsibility, and making sure every moment counts. Thank you again for your openness and for sharing your experience. Warm regards, Mara
Ours was about a 90 minute hike each way. It was colder and more wind as we got close to lake. We put on gloves at the lake. Plan on layering and keep clothing change in backpack. Stocking caps never taken off and pulled down over ears for a few sections of hike. Rent boots as the shoes you wear will get muddy and wet! Stretches of hike are over muddy/boggy areas & streams. Part of the trek is up hill over rocky terrain. It is a gorgeous hike with mtn & pastoral vistas. Couple stores in Ushuaia rent the hike boots. Only disappointment was when we got back to meeting point parking lot after the hike had to wait an hour for van pickup. Gascon, our guide, apologized and said should not have happened. Gascon nice and friendly but did not provide much info on the areas we were hiking through. If that is of interest read up before you go.
Thank you for such a detailed and thoughtful review. Laguna Esmeralda is a beautiful but truly Patagonian hike — changing weather, wind near the lake, muddy sections and rocky terrain are all part of the experience. Your advice about layering, gloves and proper footwear is very accurate and helpful for future travelers. The landscape along the way, with mountain views and peat bog areas, makes the effort worthwhile. Regarding the delay at the end of the trek, we understand how frustrating it can be to wait after a long hike. As mentioned at the time, it should not have happened, and we appreciate your patience. About the guiding style, this trek is designed primarily as a nature-focused hiking experience rather than a heavily interpretative tour. That said, we value your feedback about the level of information shared during the walk, as it helps us continue refining the balance between pace, safety, and content. We’re glad you found the hike gorgeous overall, and we hope Laguna Esmeralda remains a highlight of your time in Ushuaia. Best regards, Mara.
Our guide Antonela was great and very experienced. She responded very well to the different needs in the group and seemed very competent and professional. Good clothing, good hiking boots and medium fitness are required.
